General funds, to begin approximately August 2026, contingent on satisfactory performance, operational and program needs, actual staffing requirements, and availability of funds. Position may be converted from 9-month to 11-month or 11-month to 9-month, as operational needs are required. This is a non-remote position; on-site presence is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Under general supervision, teach a range of transfer-level HAW courses and perform other teaching-related duties that include but are not limited to planning, organizing, and independently carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments. Duties may also include teaching HWST courses.

* Develop curriculum and support courses to meet student needs and college objectives, including but not limited to courses that contextualize HAW (and HWST) for transfer and CTE programs.

* Instructional assignments may involve in-person, distance education, and other instructional formats.

* Develops and updates curriculum, teaching methods, materials, and assessment strategies to improve learning based on assessment results.

* May involve developing and teaching noncredit and off-campus courses for targeted groups in support of allied programs.

* Participates in division, campus, institution-related service activities as well as community-service.

* Maintains disciplinary expertise through professional development to and enhance curriculum quality.

* Must be available for evening and weekend teaching assignments, teaching on campus, off-campus at military bases, and/or at secondary education sites (high schools). To teach on a military base, Department of Defense security clearance will be required. To teach Early College courses for DOE schools, background checks will be required.

* Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential. The College emphasizes the "open door" concept and serves all student and community populations.

* Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, AND one of the following:

* Master's degree in Hawaiian Language; OR

* Master's degree in Hawaiian as a Second Language; OR

* Master's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian; OR

* Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof; OR

* Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian with 3 years related work experience; OR

* Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian as a Second Language with 3 years related work experience; OR

* Bachelor's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian with 3 years related work experience; OR

* Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with 3 years related work experience. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof.

Note:

"Advanced coursework" is defined as 300-400 level courses offered in a bachelor's program. Minimum qualifications (degrees and credits) must be earned from regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary colleges and universities recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available, others will be considered as acting instructor.

Desirable Qualifications

* Ph.D. in Hawaiian.

* Community college experience in teaching college (transfer) level HAW.

* Community college experience in teaching HWST courses.

* Evidence of ability to contextualize course content of HAW and HWST courses for CTE and transfer-level programs.
