Position: EAL Assistant (Boarding)

New Hall School is seeking a compassionate and motivated EAL Assistant (Boarding) to support English language learners aged 5–19. This residential role offers the chance to make a real difference to international students, helping them develop confidence, fluency, and independence both academically and socially. You will work closely with the New Hall English Language Academy and boarding teams, providing tailored support through in‑class assistance, small group and one‑to‑one sessions, and co‑curricular activities.

The role also involves contributing to EAL residential courses outside term time and supporting students on trips and cultural outings. This is an exciting opportunity for recent graduates or those with relevant experience in education or EAL, with training provided. Living on‑site allows you to be fully involved in the vibrant boarding community, promoting an immersive English‑speaking environment.

Key responsibilities:
  • to support students in developing English proficiency to better access and succeed in their curricular subjects
  • to deliver one‑to‑one and small group EAL sessions
  • to provide support across subjects and adapt learning materials to students’ needs
  • to monitor student progress and communicate observations to staff
  • to encourage students’ willingness to develop their English language proficiency outside of the school day in various activities (e.g. reading circles)
  • to supervise boarders on trips, excursions, and cultural events
  • to contribute to EAL residential courses outside term time
The successful candidate will be expected:
  • to support and to contribute to the Catholic ethos of the School, as outlined in the Mission & Ethos Statement and Aims of the School
  • to hold at least a diploma level qualification in TEFL/TESOL or equivalent
  • to be educated to degree level with a minimum of a 2:1 (or above) in English, Business, Psychology, or related discipline
  • to have previous experience of working in a School
  • to have excellent communication, organisational, and teamwork skills
  • to demonstrate patience, cultural sensitivity, and empathy when working with young people
  • to have a clear understanding of safeguarding and the welfare of children
  • to demonstrate a positive, engaging and proactive attitude
  • to show commitment to ongoing professional development in the field of TESOL
  • to have experience supporting young people and/or delivering EAL sessions
  • to have knowledge of the UK National Curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, including GCSE and A Level programmes
  • to be able to communicate in more than one language or demonstrate fluency in a second language
  • to have familiarity with Cambridge, iGCSE, and IELTS
  • to have experience of working in a boarding school environment
  • to demonstrate awareness of the cultural and social challenges faced by students with English as an additional language
