Job Description

We have an opening for a Technical Trainer in the Safety Education and Training Office. In this role, in close collaboration with instructional designers and subject matter experts you will apply learning principles and instructional strategies to design and deliver impactful instructor-led training in support of Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) programs, with a primary emphasis on radiation protection training and qualification programs (e.g., Radiological Worker, Radiological Control Technician (RCT), and related technical training, including Health Physicist professional development support).

You will also ensure training programs meet applicable Department of Energy (DOE) directives, standards, and the Laboratory's requirements, and effectively engage a diverse workforce across multiple generations. Training assignments may include support for DOE-regulated radiological training and qualification programs aligned with applicable requirements and guidance (e.g., DOE O 426.2A, DOE-HDBK-1078, DOE-HDBK-1130, and DOE-HDBK-1122). This position is within the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will
  • Design, develop, deliver, and present engaging instructor-led training using a variety of methods, including classroom instruction, computer-based training, structured self-study activities, and performance-based practical evaluations, in support of radiological and other ES&H topics.
  • Apply adult learning principles, instructional design best practices, and the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) to develop and maintain effective training materials, lesson plans, and instructional content that support consistent delivery and positive learner performance outcomes.
  • Conduct periodic training needs analyses and help identify required knowledge, skills, and abilities to support development or revision of courses, learning objectives, and training outcomes, with particular emphasis on radiation protection training and qualification needs.
  • Create, revise, and maintain course content and training assets (e.g., lesson materials, scripts, graphics, assessments, and supporting resources) to ensure accuracy, relevance, engagement, and alignment with DOE requirements and Laboratory needs.
  • Develop and implement evaluation methods to assess learner performance and training effectiveness, including participant feedback, written assessments, exam content, practical demonstrations, and other performance evaluations (e.g., OJT evaluations or oral boards), as applicable.
  • Gather, analyze, and use feedback and performance data to refine course content, improve instructional delivery, and support continuous improvement and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with instructional designers, subject matter experts, and directorate personnel to assess training needs, develop and present proposed solutions, and facilitate stakeholder review and concurrence.
  • Utilize instructional tools and technologies, and assess related equipment/software needs, enhance the learning experience, maintain effective delivery approaches, and recommend solutions based on required functionality and training needs.
