Job Description:

The main function of a tutor is to help students improve their academic performance. Tutors help students understand key concepts in their coursework during individual or group tutoring sessions. An important role of the tutor is to help the student attain self-confidence by providing positive feedback, encouragement, and helpful tools to attain success in the course. Tutors do not provide answers;

they guide the student toward independence and help them find the answer themselves.

Learning Center tutoring positions are "continuous recruitment." We accept tutor applications year‑round and contact qualified applicants when tutoring is needed. Demand is based on student needs in each specific course or discipline and can change from semester to semester and even week to week. There is no guarantee of continued employment from semester to semester.

All tutoring positions are temporary and part‑time (less than 29 hours per week). Applicants should be willing to work a minimum of 5 hours a week. The Learning Center operates seven days a week and offers day, evening, and weekend appointments for students, both in‑person and online. Working hours depend on the number of students requiring tutoring, your availability, and the needs of the Learning Center.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Tutor students in courses of which you have been approved to tutor.
  • Work with students who may be having trouble in the course and/or under stress.
  • Help students understand ideas and concepts presented in the course or textbook.

  • Offer students positive feedback, patience, respect, and understanding as they learn.
  • Understand course requirements and coordinate with course instructors or departments.
  • Use a computer to follow a schedule of appointments and engage in tutoring.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date electronic reports on each tutoring session.
  • Maintain knowledge of materials available in the Learning Center.
  • Stay abreast of new materials and software programs used by students.
  • Cooperate in ongoing Learning Center activities.
  • Participate in periodic tutor training and staff meetings.
  • Perform related work as required.

Preferred Candidates:
