Position Overview
The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for the day-to-day instruction and supervision of adult learners attending class to improve basic skills and obtain their GED. A major emphasis of the program is to help students become gainfully employed or retain employment.
CompensationPaid at the local hourly salary schedule of $26 per hour (maximum 19 hours per week). The position is 100% grant funded and pending grant approval.
ScheduleTuesday and Thursday nights.
Responsibilities- Administer assessment instruments to diagnose, evaluate, and place adult learners;
- Teach in traditional, distance education, and online formats;
- Submit reports and data as required and participate in committee assignments;
- Plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or online;
- Provide learning opportunities aligned with learner’s knowledge, skills, and interests;
- Link instruction to the learner’s academic needs based on assessment;
- Select materials and teaching styles to address individual learning styles;
- Use technology to extend learner knowledge and competency;
- Resolve conflicts and problems in the classroom;
- Create a respectful and supportive learning environment;
- Convey expectations of success to adult learners;
- Inform entering learners of available support services;
- Record learner goals and needs;
- Acknowledge learner doubts or anxieties about entering the program;
- Participate in professional development opportunities, including the Annual Adult Education Summer Conference;
- Support state and national adult education and literacy advocacy organizations;
- Administer assessment instruments and develop a Plan of Instruction (POI) for each learner;
- Utilize assessment results to develop instructional objectives;
- Observe other classes for curriculum consultation and coordination directed by the Program Director;
- Assist with grant applications, proposals, publicity materials, learner recruitment, and program activities such as workshops and graduation;
- Engage learners in analysis, investigation, and interpretation; and
- Assist with intake and orientation, providing information on philosophy, goals, services, schedules, and attendance policies.
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution;
- Ability to work the scheduled hours and location referenced in this posting;
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, presentation, and writing skills;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products;
- Effective written and oral communication skills;
- Experience working with computers and software;
- Ability to work well with others in an innovative team environment.
- Master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution;
- Teaching experience at the K‑12 or postsecondary level;
- Knowledge and understanding of adult education and lifelong learning.
