Job Purpose

The post holder will be responsible for delivering high‑quality Functional Skills teaching in English and/or Mathematics to learners across a range of apprenticeship programmes. The postholder will be supported to develop broader curriculum delivery support and responsibility to meet the five‑year strategy as the company expands. The role will involve delivering engaging classroom‑based sessions and tailored one‑to‑one support to meet individual learner needs, supporting learners to achieve their qualifications in a timely manner.

The tutor will also be responsible for conducting initial and diagnostic assessments using BKSB, tracking learner progress, and embedding safeguarding, Prevent, and British Values within delivery. The post holder will contribute to the organisation’s commitment to outstanding teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum development, ensuring compliance with ESFA funding requirements, Awarding Body quality assurance procedures and Ofsted expectations.

Key Accountabilities Teaching, Learning and Assessment
  • Plan and deliver high‑quality, engaging Functional Skills lessons in English and/or Mathematics in both classroom and one‑to‑one settings.
  • Adapt teaching methods and resources to meet individual learner needs, including differentiated delivery for varying abilities.
  • Deliver bespoke 1:1 support sessions to address specific skills gaps and support learner progression.
  • Assess learner work, provide constructive feedback, and track progress against targets.
Curriculum Development and Innovation
  • Contribute to the design, development, and continuous improvement of the Functional Skills curriculum.
  • Develop and review schemes of work, lesson resources, and assessment materials to ensure they are engaging, relevant, and aligned to awarding body standards.
  • Ensure curriculum content is contextualised to learners’ vocational areas and individual goals.
  • Embed English and Mathematics skills in practical, real‑life contexts to enhance learner engagement and achievement.
  • Support the integration of digital learning tools and innovative teaching approaches to enhance delivery.
  • Contribute to standardisation activities to ensure consistency and quality across the curriculum.
Initial Assessment and Individual Learning Plans
  • Conduct initial and diagnostic assessments using BKSB to identify learner starting points and development needs.
  • Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) with clear, measurable targets.
  • Regularly review and update learner progress, ensuring timely interventions are in place where required.
Learner Progress and Achievement
  • Support learners to successfully complete Functional Skills qualifications within agreed timescales.
  • Prepare learners for examinations, including mock assessments and revision sessions.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date learner records in line with organisational and funding requirements.
Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values
  • Embed safeguarding, Prevent duty, and British Values into teaching, learning, and assessment practices.
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, following organisational policies and procedures.
  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion within all aspects of delivery.
  • Develop external stakeholder relationships (Prevent network) to keep abreast of statutory obligations (Prevent and Safeguarding) to create plans to communicate to learners and employers.
  • Work closely with the Head of Department to provide support to maintain the Prevent Risk Register and Prevent Action Plan.
