How to Apply

    • interest and qualifications for the course;
    • section times you would be available;
    • rank‑ordered list of teaching preferences if applying for more than one of the Philosophy course positions posted.
  • A resume or curriculum vitae.

  • Unofficial UM transcript.

  • Unofficial undergraduate transcript showing GPA.

  • Previous UM teaching evaluations or teaching history, as applicable.

Responsibilities
  • Attend all lectures and exams for your preferred course. Verify your schedule against the course schedule for the GSI position you are applying for; all GSIs must attend lecture and discussion times as posted.

  • Run discussion sections as scheduled. If you can teach only some of the scheduled sections, indicate which ones are teachable in your cover letter.

  • Hold at least two office hours each week.

  • Grade assignments per lead faculty instruction.

  • Meet weekly with the lead instructor and respond promptly to emails.

Required Qualifications
  • Enrolled in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan.

  • Available to teach the scheduled section times.

  • Have previously taken at least one philosophy course (or equivalent) as an undergraduate or graduate student and demonstrated expertise and interest in the subject area.

  • Experience with Canvas.

  • If instruction at an undergraduate institution was not in English, you must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI‑OET or have the test waived by the ELI before being eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.

Desired Qualifications
  • Strong preference for applicants with experience in this specific area of philosophy.

  • Previous experience teaching philosophy courses is desired.

  • Previous experience as a GSI is desired.

Course Description

The Philosophy Department is looking to hire up to four GSIs in the Fall 2026 term to lead discussion sections for faculty‑led lectures in the following courses:

  • Phil 110
  • Phil 183
  • Phil 340
  • Phil 356
Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and may change at any time.
