Camp Read-a-Rama Counselor (2 Intern Positions)

Job Summary

Camp Read-a-Rama Counselors work closely with library staff to run a week-long literacy camp held at the Snohomish Community Library, which is part of the Sno-Isle Library District. Camp Read-a-Rama uses children’s books as the springboard for all program activities. Campers ages 7‑11 enjoy experiences around books and build connections and community to nurture a culture of reading.

Must be available to work August 17–20, 2026, for Camp Read‑a‑Rama at the Snohomish Library. The typical schedule will include daytime shifts from approximately 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The final schedule will be verified prior to hire.

Essential Functions
  • Under the guidance of library staff, lead campers in various aspects of Camp Read‑a‑Rama including but not limited to planning, preparation, and implementation of activities, crafts, games and music for camp as assigned.
  • Assist in setup and clean up/tear down of activities and spaces.
  • Support library staff with the safety and well‑being of camp participants, including following camp safety guidelines and working with participants who are feeling unsure, navigating interpersonal conflict, or other needs.
  • Facilitate or assist with daily read‑alouds as assigned.
  • Greet customers and direct them to appropriate library staff as necessary.
  • May shadow and assist other library staff.
  • Connect and engage with children/camp attendees demonstrating positive behavior, patience, and enthusiasm to guide participants.
  • Support a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment for all camp participants, families, and staff, recognizing and respecting differences in identity, culture, ability, and lived experience.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Supervision

This position reports to the Library Manager or Assistant Library Manager and will shadow and work with many different job titles. This position does not supervise.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to provide clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to receive and follow directions.
  • Ability to operate with a basic level of proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Outlook & Word.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to uphold the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community.
Required Qualifications
  • Energetic and enthusiastic about libraries and working with youth.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and positively interact with customers.
  • Open to trying new things and creatively solving problems.
  • Must arrive on time for scheduled shifts.
  • Must attend camp orientation and/or training prior to the start of camp.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Enrolled in or a recent graduate of an education-focused college or university program.
  • Training in children’s literature.
  • Experience working with children in an educational capacity.
  • Experience and knowledge of working with diverse communities.

Note:

This position will require a background check and a camp orientation, along with First Aid/CPR Training provided by Sno-Isle Libraries prior to August 17, 2026. There may also be a few hours of remote work to complete the program evaluation review after the end of the camp.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Most of the work is carried out in a generally accessible, safe, indoor and/or outdoor environment. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent may be required to operate computers. The incumbent must occasionally move objects or materials weighing up to 35 pounds.

The incumbent must regularly communicate with coworkers and members of the public. These contacts and situations are deemed to be generally safe and free of undue stress, but require incumbents to be cordial, helpful, and skilled in interpersonal relations with others both in the public and within the Library District.
