Position Overview
The School of Music at the University of Kansas offers a comprehensive array of programs of study at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels. The School provides required coursework for students pursuing a profession in music as well as elective opportunities for the overall student body.
The School invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for Instructor positions. Positions may be part‑time, full‑time, regular, or temporary and are filled as vacancies arise or in emergency situations. This term appointment is for the Summer 2026 semester and may be renewed for up to two continuous semesters based on unit needs, funding and performance. The position is not eligible for tenure or promotion.
This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement with United Academics, United Academics of KU, AAUP, or AFT. The University of Kansas is the exclusive representative of the state. The State of Kansas is a right‑to‑work state; applicants may be members or non‑members of a union without repercussions.
Note on remote work: Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers from outside Kansas. Specifically, candidates residing in California, Delaware, Idaho, and Minnesota are not eligible. Successful candidates must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.
Job Description100% Instructional Duties:
- Teach in a specific field, develop course materials, manage syllabi, create lectures and assignments, grade student work, advise students, and hold office hours.
- Collaborate with colleagues, stay current in the field, and adhere to departmental, school/college, and university policies and procedures.
- For Instruction of Undergraduate-Level Courses:
- Master’s degree in music or a closely related discipline, OR Bachelor’s degree in music or a closely related field plus five (5) or more years of applied, relevant experience, OR Bachelor’s degree in any field plus ten (10) or more years of applied, relevant experience.
- Record of research, scholarship, or achievement in discipline.
- For Instruction of Graduate-Level Courses:
- Earned terminal degree in discipline (Ph.D., D.M.A., other) in music or closely related discipline, OR Master’s degree in any discipline and seven (7) years of relevant professional experience in the field of music.
- Record of research, scholarship, or achievement in discipline.
- Years of professional music experience may suffice for the academic degree requirements and will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis for approval.
