Position Summary:

The Student Success & Advising Specialist supports students enrolled in fully online academic programs, including the MS in Criminal Justice (MS CJ), BS in Criminal Justice (BS CJ), Master of Public Administration (MPA), and BS in Fire Science & Emergency Services. This role serves as the primary point of contact for students from admission through graduation, providing holistic, student-centered advising to support academic success, retention, and timely degree completion.

The specialist proactively monitors student progress, identifies barriers, and delivers targeted interventions, while collaborating with faculty, program directors, and support services to ensure a high-quality online student experience.

Student Advising & Support
  • Provide comprehensive academic advising, including degree planning, course sequencing, and graduation requirements
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for online students throughout their academic journey
  • Support students in navigating institutional processes, policies, and available resources
  • Deliver proactive outreach and intervention strategies for at‑risk students
  • Foster an engaging and supportive virtual advising environment
  • Coordinate and manage student course registrations
  • Resolve registration issues and ensure accurate enrollment
  • Monitor enrollment patterns and communicate registration timelines
  • Support students in maintaining appropriate course loads for timely completion
Student Progress Tracking & Data Analysis
  • Track and evaluate student academic progress using student information systems
  • Identify at‑risk students through data analysis and direct communication
  • Collaborate with program directors to develop and implement personalized student success plans that support each student’s goals, strengths, and academic needs
  • Maintain accurate advising records and ensure compliance with institutional policies
  • Generate reports and provide insights to leadership on retention and performance trends
Program & Course Scheduling Support
  • Collaborate with program directors on course demand and scheduling needs
  • Assist in planning course offerings aligned with student progression
  • Liaise with the Dean’s Office regarding schedules and faculty assignments
Collaboration & Student Success Initiatives
  • Partner with faculty and support services (e.g., tutoring, counseling, financial aid) to coordinate student support
  • Contribute to retention and persistence initiatives for online learners
  • Promote student engagement, satisfaction, and academic success
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience in academic advising, student services, or a related role
  • Strong understanding of online learning environments and student success strategies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills
  • Proficiency with student information systems and Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or a related field
  • Experience working with online and/or adult learners in higher education
  • Familiarity with retention and student success strategies
  • Training or certification in academic advising
  • Experience using learning management systems (LMS)
Skills:

The required skills enable the specialist to communicate clearly and empathetically with students, understanding their unique challenges and academic goals. Proficiency in data analysis and student information systems allows for the identification of at‑risk students and the development of targeted intervention plans. Strong organizational skills are essential for managing multiple advising caseloads and coordinating with various departments to provide comprehensive support.

Preferred skills such as familiarity with learning management systems and virtual engagement tools enhance the specialist’s ability to connect with students in an online environment effectively. Together, these skills ensure the specialist can foster a supportive, proactive advising experience that promotes student retention and success.
