Are you an experienced fire service professional passionate about training the next generation? The College of Western Idaho (CWI) is seeking a Fire Service Technology Instructor to deliver hands ‑ on, standards ‑ based training that prepares students for careers in firefighting and emergency response.
In this role, you’ll provide instruction aligned with NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1582 standards, helping students develop the technical skills, physical readiness, and professional mindset required to succeed in today’s fire service.

As an instructor, you’ll play a critical role in shaping job ‑ ready graduates—combining classroom learning, practical training, and physical preparation to ensure student success in both certification and real ‑ world environments.
Instruction & Skills Training- Deliver instruction that prepares students to meet NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1582 standards and certification requirements (e.g., IFSAC, FST).
- Teach both written and hands ‑ on skills required for firefighting, including equipment use, fire suppression, rescue techniques, and emergency response procedures.
- Provide instruction on topics such as:
- SCBA use, safety procedures, and air management.
- Fire ground operations, ventilation, and suppression techniques.
- Use and maintenance of firefighting tools, equipment, and apparatus.
- Search and rescue procedures, forcible entry, and ladder operations.
- Fire behavior, safety protocols, and scene management.
- Conduct student assessments through written, oral, and practical evaluations aligned with certification standards.
- Prepare students to meet NFPA 1582 physical fitness standards and successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).
- Demonstrate and train aerobic conditioning, strength, and biomechanics required for firefighting tasks.
- Reinforce the importance of maintaining long ‑ term physical and mental readiness for fire service careers.
- Prepare students for entry into a paramilitary fire service structure, including expectations, teamwork, and workplace culture.
- Help students build problem ‑ solving skills and adaptability to address real ‑ world emergency scenarios.
- Promote professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Support student retention, engagement, and overall success.
- Record student attendance and track performance outcomes.
- Assist with registration, testing, and certification processes as needed.
- Adhere to life skills curriculum and student assessment requirements tied to state and federal programs.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and program activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to perform and demonstrate physically demanding firefighting tasks.
- Maintain readiness to instruct in both classroom and live ‑ skills training environments.
- Five (5) years of recent, documented field experience in fire service technology.
- Proven experience and certifications aligned with NFPA 1001, NFPA 1582, IFSAC, and FST standards.
- Strong ability to teach hands ‑ on, skills ‑ based training in a structured environment.
- Knowledge of current fire service tactics, standards, and technologies.
- Strong communication and instructional skills.
- Commitment to student success and professional development.
Most positions at CWI are in‑person and based on campus. While some roles may allow up to two remote workdays per week, eligibility for remote work is determined on a case‑by‑case basis at the hiring manager’s discretion. All candidates must reside within, or be willing to relocate to, a reasonable commuting distance from CWI. Employment visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
