This role may be placed at either our Far Northeast Denver Middle or High School.
OverviewThe Special Education Teacher is the instructional leader of their student caseload, directly responsible for driving student outcomes and creating an exceptional student experience. They develop daily instruction aligned with the academic program, plan lessons, grade equitably, and implement accommodations and modifications for IEPs, BIP’s, 504 plans, and MTSS interventions. They cultivate a culturally responsive classroom community, manage tier‑1 behaviors, and maintain proactive communication with families.
The position is a 10‑month academic role and is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, reporting to a member of the school leadership team.

- Read, internalize, and adhere to the KIPP Colorado Policies and Procedures manual and guidelines.
- Provide an active presence, strategic supervision, and intentional monitoring to ensure student safety and engagement in rigorous learning.
- Take ownership of professional development, including coaching sessions and implementation of feedback.
- Be prepared: internalize and prepare lessons, O3s/coaching, meetings, PD, and written communications.
- Meet professional obligations, including deadlines and schedules.
- Leverage professional tools such as Google Suite and Microsoft Suite.
- Maintain strong attendance and punctuality.
- Collaborate with colleagues to tackle challenges and implement initiatives.
- Reflect on practices to meet professional development goals.
- Actively participate in professional development, grade‑level, and department meetings.
- Serve as a positive, contributing member of grade or functional teams.
- Share candid, solutions‑oriented feedback with peers and leadership.
- Assist with student and staff recruitment and engagement activities.
- Travel as needed around Denver to other KIPP campuses, the home office, or PD events.
- Assist with other duties such as lunch duty, arrival/dismissal duty, bathroom duty, hallway duty, and school support duties.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate special education programs and other student supports.
- Maintain IEPs, 504s, evaluations, and ELL programs; ensure services are delivered with fidelity.
- Liaise with parents via trainings, meetings, and consultations.
- Provide case management for the special education caseload and instruction to students receiving supports.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of IEPs, BIPs, and FBAs.
- Coordinate students’ accommodations, modifications, and instruction with general‑education teachers.
- Support classroom teachers in understanding student support plans and requirements.
- Develop standards‑based unit plans and daily lesson plans.
- Design and deliver rigorous, backward‑planned lessons.
- Design and implement assessments aligned with daily objectives.
- Grade student material and provide feedback and support.
- Plan rigorous lessons that emphasize lesson internalization.
- Use the adopted curriculum with fidelity.
- Use data to adjust short‑ and long‑term plans for student learning needs.

- Establish and maintain relationships with students and families based on trust and respect.
- Approach practice with urgency to maximize instructional time.
- Maintain high expectations for academic work and classroom behavior.
- Establish and reinforce rules and consequences to maintain a positive, focused classroom.
- Meet professional obligations such as deadlines and schedules.
- Participate in active presence and strategic supervision and monitoring.
- Complete MLE coursework and certification requirements.
- Work with the Assistant Principal of Special Services and Special Education Teachers to implement 504s, BIPs, IEPs, safety plans, accommodations, modification, and language support for students.
- Enforce positive behavior systems and monitor behavior data.
