Head Start Teacher (Part-Time)
Position Overview
Working with children to promote social‑emotional, physical, cognitive and language development. Involves families and facilitates parent participation. PT position averaging up to 19 hours weekly. Multiple openings available.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Associate Teacher:
Pre‑School Certificate or CDA, and enrollment in an Early Childhood Degree program - Teacher I:
Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related degree with a minimum of 18 credit hours of Early Learning coursework - Teacher II:
Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related degree with a minimum of 18 credit hours of Early Learning coursework - Two years of experience in early childhood programs
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Driver qualifications are not required for this position
- Successful registration with the Central Background Registry of the Child Care Division
- CPR/First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Food Handlers Card or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
- Pass pre‑employment physical examination, renewable every two years
- Pass pre‑employment and random drug/alcohol screenings
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiencies in Microsoft Office (Outlook) and videoconferencing platforms and web tools
- Effective interpersonal communication skills in both oral and written form
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure safety in the classroom and supervise children, using the transition and counting form and procedure
- Record children's daily attendance and work with site team to determine the cause of absences
- Develop children's cognitive, physical, social‑emotional and language skills through curriculum implementation, lesson planning and individualization
- Conduct developmental and social‑emotional screenings for each child, consult with parents, and provide follow‑up and referrals for identified needs
- Create lesson plans that address children' individual goals and characteristics
- Act as a bus rider as needed to support a positive environment during bus rides
Office/Paperwork
- Use the Child Plus and Teaching Strategies Gold databases to enter or retrieve information
- Complete Progress Checkpoints for child assessment and share information with program administration and parents
- Manage office tasks such as making/receiving parent phone calls, ordering supplies, preparing materials and children's home work, and other routine office work
- Verify and submit weekly meal counts and attendance forms
Staff Development and Meetings
- Attend classes, workshops, seminars, pre‑service training and other Head Start Teacher trainings to stay current on early childhood education practices
- Attend meetings including individual reflection meetings, region meetings, site team meetings, debriefings after observations, and other meetings as needed
- Comply with MWVCAA safety and personnel policies, including punctuality and attendance
Parent Involvement
- Provide regular opportunities for parent participation and train volunteer parents in classroom activities
- Plan and implement monthly parent meetings
- Lead classroom orientations at the beginning of the school year
- Provide tools, resources and opportunities for parents to observe and practice appropriate redirection skills with their child
- Maintain relationships with parents/guardians to ensure consistent and frequent communication

Physical and Mental Demands
- Vision requirements: close and distance vision and ability to adjust focus; hearing abilities required
- Regularly lift or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds
- Manual dexterity for handling office equipment
- Incidental driving tasks may be requested for employees with a personal vehicle and current auto insurance
- Ability to remain calm and evacuate children quickly in an emergency
Work Environment
- Mostly indoor classroom and bus riding environment
- Frequent outdoor supervision of children and monitoring pick up/drop off
- Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals, creative substances such as paints
- Occasional exposure to body fluids and biohazards such as saliva, vomit and urine
