The University of Michigan-Dearborn Office of Student Life is seeking an energetic, hardworking student to serve in this exciting position.

The Office of Student Life promotes holistic education through transformational student learning experiences. We foster an inclusive community, support student development and persistence, and prepare future leaders through diverse programming, services, and partnerships.

About the experience

As a paraprofessional member of the Student Life team, the Civic Engagement Democracy Fellow will help with logistics, program planning, and support for our civic engagement initiatives, specifically democracy based programming that empowers students to create change in their communities. The role will provide an opportunity to learn new skills and enhance existing ones, while supporting the office's professional staff and enhancing the campus community.

This position will primarily focus on raising voter engagement and education, and election awareness and turnout on our campus.

This position will provide support and coordination for the Office of Student Life's sponsored student organization, Turn Up Turnout.

The Civic Engagement Democracy Fellow will report to the Coordinator of Civic Engagement and the overall Student Life team, and can anticipate an average of 10 hours per week, supporting initiatives for Midterm Elections, and programming including Civic Action Week, National Voter Registration Day, and more during the Fall 2026 Semester. The spring semester will not be as busy with an average of 6-8 hours a week.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a leadership member of the Sponsored Student Organization, Turn Up Turnout
  • Provide guidance to fellow students interested in civic and community engagement
  • Attend Dearborn-specific as well as larger steering meetings with other campuses
  • Engage with leaders on other University of Michigan campuses for larger tri-campus initiatives and planning.
  • Engage with students and leaders on all 19 Michigan colleges & universities on democracy based initiatives to support voter engagement, education, and turnout
  • Engage with local and Wayne County youth, community members, and community leaders, promoting voter registration & education initiatives off campus
  • Assist with tabling, emails, building relationships with students, faculty, and staff, and other outreach efforts as they arise
  • In collaboration with OSL staff, support conceptualizing, planning, and executing programming and events.
  • Support coalition building among academic, departmental, and community partners
  • Liaise with on-campus and off-campus partners
  • Work with OSL staff to develop and/or implement social media graphics and engagement posts to increase awareness of resources, programs, and events
  • Assist Student Life professional staff with programming through brainstorming, proposing ideas, and supporting program facilitation
  • Other opportunities as assigned/needed
Required Qualifications

Required qualifications:

enrolled student at UM-Dearborn, an ability to keep information confidential, and a desire to learn & educate fellow students. Must have the ability and make the commitment to remain non-partisan.

Additional Information

This position is Work Study eligible.

Preference given to students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn who will be graduating no earlier than April 2027 / plan to be enrolled for Fall 26 & Winter 27 semesters.
