Job Summary

The Department of English Language and Literature in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a part-time Lecturer I position with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2026. This position is non-tenure track, with a University Year appointment period (i.e., runs August 25 through May 24 each year).

The part-time (33% effort) load for a Lecturer I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is one course per semester.

The appointment period will be one course for Fall 2026 and one course for Winter 2027. The appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the College.

Responsibilities
  • This part-time Lecturer I position will include teaching one undergraduate English course in Fall 2026 and one undergraduate English course in Winter 2027.
  • Both courses should fulfill the REGIONS requirement for the undergraduate English major; specifically, we need 300- or 400-level courses that fulfill the REGIONS subcategory of 'Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Pacific Islands.'
  • Here is a description of the REGIONS requirement:
    • In Regions courses, students investigate how literary, linguistic, and cultural forms both shape and are shaped by structures of power and intersecting social identities. Through encounters with literary and cultural traditions from regions around the globe, English majors investigate issues of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, nationality and religion, geography and migration, and histories of political, economic, and cultural domination.

      They study the historical and ongoing ways in which cultural representations both contribute to and challenge inequities, injustices, exclusions, and forms of structural violence. They also learn about the myriad ways in which cultural texts create beauty and pleasure, or inspire new forms of community and new ways of imagining sustainable futures amid global-scale challenges.
Required Qualifications
  • a Ph.D. in English or Comparative Literature, conferred prior to the start date of the position;
  • expertise in literary and cultural traditions from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and/or the Pacific Islands;
  • evidence of effective undergraduate teaching.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
