Job Description

The High School Social Studies Teacher 9-12 is a highly qualified, state certified educator responsible for delivering specific course content in an online environment. Teachers provide instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students’ individual needs. Teachers monitor student progress through the learning management system, and they actively work closely with students and parents/learning coaches to advance each student’s learning toward established goals.

Teachers typically work from home but must travel occasionally throughout the year to various school functions, for state testing and as otherwise required by the school.

Position Details

This is a full‑time remote position. Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week, is required. Maintain a professional home office with no distractions during the workday (9‑5 or 8‑4 as defined by the school).

Summary

As a High School Social Studies Teacher, you will own students’ academic progress and attendance, prepare them for high‑stakes standardized tests, conduct live synchronous teaching (minimum 15 hours per week), and provide asynchronous support through emails, lesson plans, and data analysis. You will collaborate with colleagues and supervisors, submit grades, maintain the grade book, and generate formal and informal student reports.

Travel to testing sites and other school functions may be required.

Essential Functions Instructional
  • Take ownership for student’s academic progress and attendance, communicate high expectations, and show active interest in student achievement.
  • Prepare students for high‑stakes standardized tests.
  • Conduct live synchronous teaching—minimum of 15 hours per week.
  • Support objectives asynchronously, including composing and sending emails, planning course objectives, preparing learning plans, and using data to determine student needs.
  • Collaborate with others regarding instruction, resources, interventions, and data related to OHVA students’ needs and professional development of the teacher.
  • Under guidance, augment course content according to prescribed policies and procedures using appropriate asynchronous and synchronous tools.
  • Submit grades and required student work, ensuring academic honesty and integrity.
  • Maintain grade book.
  • Make placement and promotion decisions by generating formal and informal reports regarding student progress, alerting administrators to concerns about student performance.
Relationship Building
  • Establish and maintain positive rapport with families and regularly communicate with students and learning coaches/parents on an ongoing basis.
  • Support learning coaches/parents with student curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment, in line with academy policies and procedures.
  • Support students and learning coaches on a limited basis with basic computer questions when requested.
  • Understand how diverse and unique characteristics of students and their families impact required support.
  • Collaborate with other teachers to ensure all students are successfully progressing through the program, that parents have a central point of contact, and that tasks are distributed among stakeholders.
