About the Michigan Department of Education

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) provides leadership, resources, support, and guidance to over 200,000 school district staff serving approximately 1.5 million students in public and non-public schools and 39,000 students in special education transition services. MDE also provides administrative support and supervision for the Michigan School for the Deaf and the Library of Michigan.

MDE is responsible for state education leadership, implementation of state and federal education laws, disbursement of resources, licensure of educators, development of state summative assessments and accountability systems, creation of academic standards, and coordination of school health and nutrition programs. MDE works with partner education entities and stakeholders to improve public education through the Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, providing policy guidance, convening educators, and developing legislative recommendations.

Position Summary

The Homeless Education Program Consultant is the point of contact for Homeless Education services to advance state, regional, and local initiatives, focusing on supporting the whole child. Responsibilities include collaborating with the unit manager to carry out the functions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act; providing technical assistance on all aspects of the program to local education agencies, intermediate school districts, and partner agencies and organizations that serve children, youth, and families experiencing homelessness;

facilitating the collection of data and information on educational and other unique needs; promoting collaboration to address needs; coordinating activities with other state and local agencies; and administering the state’s implementation of the McKinney‑Vento and related grants.
