The Department of Geography & GISc. seeks an Assistant Professor in Transportation/Geospatial Technologies for a 9‑month, tenure‑track position contingent on funding availability. The Department offers B.S. in Geography, B.S./B.A. in Environmental Studies, and an M.S. in Geography (Professional Science Master’s option). Recent investment in cross‑disciplinary clusters (advanced computational methods, Autonomous Systems, Energy and Environmental Sustainability) provides opportunities for collaborative research and teaching.
Applications from candidates with expertise in geovisualization of big data, AI, geoanalytics, and web mapping are particularly welcome.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in transportation and geospatial technologies, including on‑campus (in‑person)/online and asynchronous online courses.
- Teach undergraduate courses as part of the Essential Studies curriculum.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate students.
- Collaborate with other Geography & GISc. faculty to achieve high‑quality learning environments.
- Advise and mentor graduate students, direct theses and independent study projects.
- Establish a research program focused on Transportation Geography/Geospatial Analytics, seeking extramural funding and supporting graduate students in the M.S. Program.
- Perform data science and visualization work with complex methodologies and large datasets.
- Conduct data analysis and develop visualization components for research projects.
- Develop and apply methods for analyzing complex transportation and geospatial data sets.
- Stay abreast of technology trends and apply them to mobility and access challenges.
- Work effectively on teams and grow professionally as a technical expert.
- Strong written and oral communication skills for teaching, inspiring, and mentoring.
- Effective interpersonal skills for collaborating with faculty, staff, and students.
- Adapt to current teaching methods, including online delivery.
- Engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Department.
- Ph.D. in Geography, Geographic Information Science, Transportation Planning, City and Regional Planning, or an allied discipline by August 15 , 2025.
- Successful completion of criminal history background check.
- Verification of identity and U.S. work eligibility per federal law.
- Trained in teaching transportation geography and geospatial courses (web mapping, geo‑visualization of big data, drone data, environmental remote sensing).
- Experience with ESRI GIS software, programming (Python), and large datasets.
- Knowledge of transportation data specifications (GTFS, AVL, APC, GBFS, OSM).
- Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Focus on transportation, especially transit, and improving mobility access in urban, suburban, and rural communities.
- Experience with web development (JavaScript, HTML, CSS).
- Proficiency in advanced statistical/machine learning techniques (regression, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, random forest, etc.).
- Evidence of teaching success.
- Demonstrated success in obtaining grants and contracts.
