Job Title

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Statewide Student Advocacy and Mentor Coordinator (Job Title Code: 7574)

Job Summary

Educational Service Unit 3 (ESU
3) seeks a collaborative and experienced leader to increase advocacy and connection for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing through the Greater Metro Regional Program (GMRP). This exempt position provides statewide leadership and coordination focused on advocacy, well‑being, communication access, and Deaf community connection for students, families, and professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain statewide DHH student advocacy groups.
  • Establish and support a statewide network of DHH mentors and role models.
  • Provide training and coaching to mentors and role models.
  • Coordinate small‑group and situational coaching interventions to build student connection and engagement within the Deaf community.
  • Promote student advocacy and social‑emotional well‑being for DHH students.
  • Act as a resource for connecting districts with School Mental Health services matching a student’s preferred communication modality.
  • Plan and coordinate social and educational opportunities for students who are DHH (Birth‑21) in environments free from language barriers.
  • Assist parents and professionals in creating a culturally responsive environment respectful of Deaf culture and identity (Deaf Mentor Advocacy).
  • Provide parent and family training and develop a statewide resource list for districts and families.
  • Serve as a resource to families, students, professionals, and school districts.
  • Assist in professional development for DHH educators, sign language interpreters, school counselors, administrators, and educators on deaf advocacy and mentoring.
  • Collaborate with Regional Coordinators to support Deaf mentoring and advocacy during regional and statewide activities.
  • Develop Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports and statewide resources related to communication access, inclusive practices, and systemic support for DHH students.
  • Attend Regional Coordinator meetings and review/respond to written and verbal communication in a timely manner.
  • Understand and comply with the ESU 3 Board of Education Personnel Policies and Employee Handbook.
  • Provide own transportation to fulfill travel requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work or a related field.
  • MA in Education or Counseling preferred.
  • Leadership experience working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  • Ability to interact effectively with State Regional Coordinator, Regional Coordinators, school employees and administrators.
  • Knowledge and/or competence in sign language and other modes of communication with DHH individuals.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and other computer applications.
  • Flexible work schedule to accommodate regional and statewide activities, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight trips.
  • No history of child abuse or negligence and able to pass required background checks.
  • Regular and dependable in‑person attendance required; occasional remote work may be allowed with supervisor approval.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $68,000–$75,000 for a 205‑day work calendar, based on experience and education.

Benefits: ESU 3 paid employee health and dental coverage.

Job is exempt. Immediate supervisor:
Greater Metro Regional Program (GMRP) Coordinator. Staff supervised:
None. Number of days worked: 205 days.

Physical Requirements

Occasional travel up to 33% of time. Frequent contact with students, parents, staff, and community members. Requires lifting/managing up to 75 pounds, repeated motions, manual dexterity, and occasional driving.
