Position: Teacher - Early Head Start - 12 Months

REPORTS TO: Child Development Supervisor

HOURS PER WEEK: 40

TERM: 12 Months

LOCATION: South Gate, CA

The Organization:

Human Services Association (HSA) is a private nonprofit agency whose principal mission is to provide families with compassionate and comprehensive care to promote wellness and build strong communities. HSA was founded in Bell Gardens in 1940 and today, HSA serves over 20,000 clients annually on a non-sectarian basis with a range of services that addresses the unique and shared needs of clients of all ages.

Program Overview:

Our Early Childhood Education Department provides services to 600 children over three distinct programs (Early Head Start, Head Start and State Preschool) at ten school sites. The California State Preschool Program provides a pre‑school experience for children ages 3 to 5 in the cities of South Gate and Huntington Park. The Early Head Start Program is a federally funded program that provides a home based and center based program for pregnant women and children ages 0‑3 that reside in zip codes of 90201 and 90280.

The Head Start Program offers a comprehensive child development program for low‑income preschoolers ages three to five years old that reside in zip code 90280.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Child Development Supervisor, the Teacher, is responsible for the implementation of program curriculum and school readiness activities. Provides direct supervision of children and ensures children’s health & safety at all times. Ensures all program activities in all service areas and ensures the program meets or exceeds funding source requirements based on the performance standards, Title 22, and title V regulations.

Adheres and complies with program regulations and other relevant regulations in all ECE programs.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement activities aligned with school readiness goals using High/Scope Curriculum.
  • Develop lesson plans and learning goals.
  • Supervise and coordinate curriculum activities.
  • Conduct and coordinate small and large group activities.
  • Foster a collaborative learning environment using Conscious Discipline.
  • Encourage exploration, problem‑solving, cooperation, and choice‑making.
  • Follow consistent schedules with varied learning experiences.
  • Actively participate in all planned activities.
  • Record observations using Learning Genie.
  • Ensure culturally sensitive, anti‑biased curriculum.
  • Complete screenings (ASQ‑3, ASQ:SE), DRDP 2015, and evaluations.

2. Child Supervision & Support

  • Provide ongoing supervision of indoor/outdoor areas (sight & sound).
  • Arrange and supervise educational activities, including mealtimes.
  • Conduct daily health checks and document findings.
  • Assist with toileting and hygiene needs.
  • Ensure classroom cleanliness and safety.
  • Implement nutrition and health programs.
  • Participate in emergency drills (fire, earthquake, lockdown).
  • Address immediate center crises as needed.

3. Child Development & Special Needs

  • Support children’s physical, emotional, and developmental needs.
  • Work with Disabilities staff to support children with IFSP/IEP needs.
  • Support IFSP/IEP implementation in instruction and classroom routines.
  • Track student progress and intervene as needed.
  • Develop goals and objectives for individual children.

4. Family & Community Engagement

  • Communicate respectfully and sensitively with families.
  • Conduct parent conferences and maintain records.
  • Coordinate parent volunteers and documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all family and staff information.
  • Represent HSA at community and professional functions.
  • Participate in recruitment and community events (including nights/weekends).

5. Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate child records, attendance, and meal counts.
  • Complete lesson plans, observations, and health/safety documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with licensing, Head Start, and program standards.
  • Identify and report suspected child abuse (Mandated Reporter Guidelines).
  • Report to work on time and maintain good attendance.
  • Participate positively in all program activities.
  • Model the Standard of Conduct Policy.
  • Collaborate with the agency team and promote HSA’s mission.
