Overview
Online Chair is a full‑time, 12‑month contracted administrative faculty position located residentially in Lynchburg, VA. The primary role is to maintain the integrity of online programs and to ensure that their delivery aligns with the University mission and vision, while ensuring operational excellence in program administration, faculty recruitment and retention, and student success.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- 1. Faculty and Curriculum
Review, assess, and maintain the integrity of online courses and curriculum delivery in alignment with educational guidelines and university mission. Develop curriculum, meet with publishers, collaborate with Subject Matter Experts, and monitor End of Course Evaluations and grade distribution. Communicate hiring needs and recommendations, assist in faculty recruitment and onboarding, and coordinate online faculty training and mentoring. Supervise online faculty, manage faculty assignments and payroll verification, and provide oversight for contract fulfillment and instructional quality.
- 2. Administrative and Financial Affairs
Communicate faculty textbook and material needs, ensure access to electronic resources, participate in vendor and publisher meetings, and assist in planning the annual budget for the area of oversight.
- 3. University Service
Serve on University, College/School, or departmental committees as assigned. Participate in faculty orientation, baccalaureate, commencement exercises, and special events, and contribute to special projects and assignments that support the academic division and University.
- 4. Spiritual Leadership
Encourage a commitment to Christian life, sensitivity to others' needs, and active communication of the Christian faith. Foster Liberty University’s doctrinal beliefs and promote spiritual development among faculty, staff, and students, ensuring that Christian values remain central to the institution’s mission.
Directly oversees Instructional Mentors; indirectly oversees 15 supervisors and 5 non‑supervisory personnel.
Qualifications and CredentialsMinimum Qualifications
- Teaching experience in higher education, with experience in residential and online modalities a plus.
- Understanding of technologies associated with higher education delivery.
- Experience with curricular development and planning.
- Passion for student and faculty development and mentorship.
- Academic and research experience (conducting and disseminating) in a related field.
- Commitment to the vision, mission, and purpose of Liberty University.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. or terminal degree in a specific area of study, or related field.
- History of outstanding teaching and student mentorship.
- Experience in administration.
- Interest in emerging educational technologies.
- Communication and Comprehension – Effectively communicate verbally and in writing, convey clear information, and respond professionally.
- Organizational Skills – Manage multiple responsibilities, schedule, and meet deadlines.
- Computer Skills – Proficiency with typical office software and online learning platforms.
- Teamwork – Contribute to a collaborative environment and respect colleagues.
- Problem Solving – Analyze information, make judgments, and resolve routine and complex issues.
- Occasional travel to local and campus locations.
- Extended periods of sitting for desk work or typing.
- Regular hearing and speaking for communication.
- Occasional standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
- Regularly lift 10 pounds or less.
Work Environment – Climate‑controlled office setting, well lit, with moderate noise levels.
Driving Requirements – Use of personal or University vehicles; valid Virginia driver’s license, clean DMV record, and liability insurance required.
