Assistant Superintendent of Native Education and Tribal Relations
Salary: $169,552 annually
Location:
Olympia, Washington. Telework is a combination of in‑building and off‑site days. During the initial training period the employee must work in the office 5 days per week. After training, the employee may transition to limited telework with an in‑person schedule of two (2) days per week. This is not a fully remote position.
OSPI oversees public K–12 education in Washington state. It works with 295 public school districts and 7 state‑tribal education compact schools, allocating funding and providing resources, tools, and technical assistance so every student receives a high‑quality public education.

This role oversees and leads a state‑level team, providing technical assistance, training, and information to school districts and tribal communities to keep them current with Native American curriculum and ensure equal access for Native students. The position also oversees federal and state policy implementation, budget oversight, and serves as the OSPI liaison with Tribes, Tribal Compact Schools, and the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs.
In addition, the office works to advance the Center for the Improvement of Student Learning with a focus on math and English achievement for Native students.
- Provide leadership, technical assistance, and advocacy for American Indian and Alaska Native students.
- Assist school districts in meeting the educational needs of these students.
- Facilitate development and implementation of curricula and instructional materials in native languages, culture, history, and tribal sovereignty.
- Assist districts in acquiring funding for curriculum development with native language practitioners and tribal elders.
- Coordinate technical assistance for public schools that serve AIAN students.
- Seek funds to develop support services to increase AIAN teachers and principals and provide professional development.
- Recruitment and retention; academic transition programs; academic financial support; teacher preparation; teacher induction; professional development.
- Facilitate inclusion of native language programs in school districts.
- Collaborate with agencies to provide accurate, disaggregated data on AIAN students.
- Prepare reports to inform the Governor, legislature, and the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs about Indian education status, successes, deficiencies, and needs.
- Connecting the team to OSPI’s vision and communicating with other OSPI teams.
- Managing and directing staff work, providing tools, training, monitoring, and performance assessment.
- Offering leadership support, coaching, mentoring; conducting employee performance reviews.
- Recruiting, hiring, and evaluating staff that align with the agency’s mission.
- Providing training opportunities, mentorship, feedback, and maintaining a fair workplace.
- Overseeing training offered across the state alongside the Office of Native Education staff.
- Ensure budget alignment and fiscal soundness.
- Monitor budgets monthly.
- Collaborate with agencies to provide accurate, disaggregated data on AIAN students.
- Lead the Washington State Native American Education Advisory Committee.
- Maintain working relationships with Tribes and Tribal communities.
- Advise and consult with school boards, administrators, educators on involving Native families and communities in education.
Bachelor of Arts, Education, Business Administration, or related field.
