Adjunct Teaching Librarian - Spokane Falls Community College
Spokane College seeks qualified candidates for the position of a part-time Adjunct Teaching Librarian. Duties for this particular adjunct position are to teach mostly one-shot information literacy lessons across various curriculums in multiple modalities; create and update instructional materials in various formats (including videos, research guides, and online course content). Other responsibilities include providing research assistance to students and other library users at the SFCC Library reference desk and online, collection development work, and other projects as assigned.
This work predominantly occurs in person at the SFCC Library. The position has designated office space, may allow for some remote work for lesson preparation, and will also work in an active public space when providing "on the spot" research assistance to library users.
The hours allotted for this position typically occur at SFCC Library during the library's hours of operation, Monday-Thursday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m and Friday 8:00 a.m.
- 3:00 p.m. Schedule has some flexibility in modality and location based on class schedules. The Adjunct Instructional Librarian can anticipate approximately 14 hours of work per week during fall quarter.
Duties and responsibilities include:
- Partner with subject matter faculty across various academic programs to develop and teach information literacy lessons (in person, synchronously online and asynchronously online) relevant to their coursework.
- Create instructional materials in a variety of formats (with an emphasis on accessible digital content) and in collaboration with other library faculty members and subject matter faculty.
- Provide 1:1 research and reference services to our community college community and the public, via multiple modalities (e.g., in-person, via video conference, email, chat, or phone).
- Develop, maintain, and promote the library's collections and initiatives in collaboration with the library team.
- Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes, and collective bargaining agreements.
- Support and advance Spokane Colleges' mission, values, goals, and objectives, and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include:
- Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution completed by the first day of employment.
- At least 1 year of experience preparing and delivering information literacy lessons in a classroom setting.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a teaching, learning, and working environment that honors equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Ability to use and teach others how to create complex search strategies on the free web, library discovery systems and library databases.
- Experience creating instructional materials using a variety of educational and/or library technologies (e.g., Lib Guides, video creation software, learning management software, Microsoft 365, Google Drive).
- Demonstrated proficiency in using technology, with a proven ability to quickly learn and use new tools and software to meet objectives in an effective manner.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively across modalities.
- Experience providing respectful customer service to diverse clientele.
- Understanding of and willingness to support the role that community colleges serve in higher education, and specifically the mission, values, goals and objectives of SFCC and Spokane Colleges.
- The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution and community and technical college system.
Desired qualifications include:
- Previous experience equivalent to one full academic year as a professional librarian or professional experience in secondary or higher education.
- Previous experience creating accessible digital content or completed training on creating accessible digital content.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are preferred.
