Graduate Assistant Civic Coordinator

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement is seeking applications for a Graduate Assistant - Civic Coordinator. In this role, you will collaborate with the Assistant Director of Civic and Community Engagement to research, organize, implement, and evaluate our civic learning and engagement programs. This position offers an exceptional opportunity for individuals aspiring to careers focused on fostering student leadership and civic identity through coordinating and executing student civic engagement initiatives, programs, and services.

The Graduate Assistant will also contribute to the development and implementation of programs throughout the spring semester and summer break.

Assist the Assistant Director of Civic & Community Engagement in coordinating efforts for the office's Civic Impact Initiative:

Developing and implementing a comprehensive civic engagement strategy to build awareness, mobilize support, and drive action on issues related to social justice and equality through a student-centered and student-led model, including identifying 2-3 priority civic education initiatives per semester, setting goals, and contributing to strategic timelines.

Organizing non-partisan events, campaigns, and initiatives to enhance voter education, registration, and turnout among HMC students, including, but not limited to, tabling, workshops, outreach campaigns, and supporting outreach efforts through platforms such as Turbovote and Motivote.

Planning, executing, and evaluating educational and celebratory events, including voter outreach and registration drives, educational workshops, transportation assistance for voting, and special events in observance of National Voter Registration Day, Election Day, Voter Education Week, and other national Civic Holidays.

Advocating for the use of voter awareness and registration platforms; and facilitating their integration into existing networking platforms, such as Turbo Vote, Motivote, etc.

Developing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs) for civic engagement events and initiatives, including creating planning documents, timelines, and logistical checklists to ensure consistency, continuity, and smooth transitions across student leaders and staff.

Providing support to HMC and 5C student organizations and projects focused on civic engagement and learning, such as the Living Learning Community and Every Vote Counts Claremont, as well as identifying additional HMC and 5C student organizations to collaborate with.

Promoting lectures and events related to civic engagement and democracy within the Claremont Colleges and the local community.

Designing and creating marketing materials for civic engagement initiatives, including flyers, social media graphics, and outreach content, and contributing content to campus communications such as the DSA Digest newsletter to increase visibility and participation.

Spearhead efforts to research, evaluate, and improve the efficacy of our work, including designing and implementing surveys, participation tracking systems, and post-event assessments.

Complete weekly update reports as guided by the Assistant Director of Civic and Community Engagement.

Ensure a smooth transition by completing transition documents for their successor by the end of their term.

Performs other unit or DSA-related duties as assigned, such as proctoring exams for the Office of Accessible Education, tabling for DSA events (Fall Fest, DSA Open House).

Education and Experience:

Education:

Bachelor's degree and enrollment in a Master's degree program in Higher Education Administration, Mathematics, Science, Education, or another related field.

Experience:

Experience developing and maintaining positive and trusting relationships with members of various community organizations, schools, and outreach programs.

Licenses/Certifications:

Valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the College's automobile insurance carrier.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work effectively with HMC students.

Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment in decision-making.

Ability to prioritize multiple duties/tasks and meet deadlines.

Ability to think strategically, plan effectively, and manage projects/events.

Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to high standards and attention to detail.

Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment and interact successfully with individuals with varying abilities, backgrounds, interests, and beliefs.

Ability to work weekends depending on programmatic needs.

Adept at using software such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Adobe Acrobat.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in an educational environment.

Experience in managing a student program and working with students.
