Academic Advisor

Department: Academic Success
Supervisor: Assistant Dean, Academic Success Center

Schedule: Up to 29 hours per week.
General Statement of Duties: The Academic Success Center at Worcester State University seeks a student-centered and collaborative Part-Time Academic Advisor to provide academic advising and support services to undergraduate students across all disciplines. This position serves as a primary walk-in advisor, assisting students with academic planning, degree requirements, registration, major exploration, academic policies, and referrals to campus resources. The Part-Time Academic Advisor also serves as a key contact for students considering course withdrawals, University withdrawals, or leaves of absence, providing guidance, support, and assistance with the completion of required documentation.

The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrate sensitivity to diverse student needs, maintain confidentiality, and provide exceptional customer service in a fast-paced student services environment. This position requires in-person availability and does not include remote work.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a walk-in advisor to undergraduate students across all disciplines to answer general questions related to program and University requirements.
  • Advise students regarding degree requirements, academic policies, registration procedures, academic standing, and University resources.
  • Assist students with major exploration, academic planning, and referrals to faculty advisors and campus support services.
  • Respond to student inquiries via email, phone, and in-person appointments.
  • Serve as the primary contact for students considering course withdrawals, University withdrawals, or leaves of absence.
  • Counsel students regarding available options and assist with the completion and processing of required documentation.
  • Connect students with appropriate academic, financial, and personal support resources.
  • Support Academic Success Center efforts related to student retention, persistence, and academic success.
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions and advising activities.
  • Utilize student information systems and technologies including Colleague/Datatel, Self-Service, Starfish (Early Support), Image Now, TES (Transfer Equivalency System), Accuplacer, and other University systems.
  • Maintain working knowledge of University policies, academic regulations, transfer credit processes, and general education requirements.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to student employees assigned to the Academic Success Center.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Job Requirements

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree.
    • Experience working in higher education, student services, advising, counseling, or a related field.
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, active listening, and advising skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and community members.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage confidential information with professionalism, sensitivity, and discretion.
    • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or a related field.
    • Experience using student information systems and student success technologies such as Starfish, Colleague/Datatel, Self-Service, Image Now, TES, Accuplacer, or similar platforms.
    • Experience supporting student retention, persistence, and academic success initiatives.
    • Experience working with students in transition, including first-year, transfer, and academically at-risk populations.
