Position: Continuing Education Senior Consultant - Non-Classified.

Position Summary

The Colorado State Library is seeking a Continuing Education Senior Consultant to spearhead statewide training and professional development programs. The role serves as a subject‑matter expert, consulting with local libraries, analyzing program data to drive continuous improvement, and representing Colorado in national forums.

Work Environment

This is a full‑time position fully funded by federal funds, eligible for a hybrid work environment, and requires residing within Colorado. The role may require extended evening or weekend hours, up to 20% travel within Colorado (including some overnight), and a valid Colorado driver’s license. Remote work is possible, but the incumbent must be able to travel to meetings, trainings, and consultations as required.

Strategic

Leadership (60%)
  • Coordinate statewide professional development for library staff, prioritizing continuing education and establishing competencies and standards.
  • Develop, maintain, and expand online learning resources for library staff professional development.
  • Design and conduct assessment and evaluation for continuing education to public, school, and academic libraries.
  • Partner with outside agencies on professional development opportunities for library staff.
  • Evaluate existing and emerging technologies for training and learning improvement.
  • Evaluate all data collected from continuing education activities to drive continuous improvement.
  • Provide consultation and training on user experience design, instructional design, and presentation tools (video, audio, web synchronous and asynchronous).
  • Expand expertise on library trends and issues through self‑directed learning and attending regional, state, and national meetings as funding allows.
  • Lead instructional initiatives by applying adult learning principles and guiding others on research‑based instructional design.
Resource Management (20%)
  • Manage and distribute all State Library continuing education resources and partner organization materials.
  • Oversee, evaluate, and refine continuing education services web content, ensuring accessibility standards for all digital assets.
  • Create curated digital and physical learning materials for library professionals.
Teamwork (20%)
  • Participate actively in a library development team to establish and accomplish unit goals, priorities, and objectives.
  • Share new learning gained from professional development opportunities to identify potential collaborations.
  • Seek opportunities to partner within other Colorado Department of Education units and other state library agencies.
Minimum Qualifications , Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Six (6) years of experience only, or a combination of education and experience totaling six (6) years.
  • MS in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an accredited institution, OR
  • At least six (6) years of relevant professional library experience.
Qualifications for Success in the Position
  • At least four years of demonstrated experience in training, adult education, or project management.
  • Professional experience in designing and facilitating training for adult learners.
  • Professional experience in presenting at conferences/workshops; formal or informal mentoring experience.
Knowledge
  • Learning Management Systems (LMS) and virtual, instructor‑led training tools.
  • Library service issues and trends (customer service, branch leadership).
  • Adult learning strategies.
  • Growth mindset, assets‑based coaching, design thinking, and community systems building.
  • Requirements for creating accessible training and documents.
Skills
  • Designing and facilitating in‑person, virtual, and blended training, presentations, and other adult learning opportunities.
  • Project planning, management, and evaluation, including experience with grant projects.
  • Mastery of MS Office (Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
  • Mastery of Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms).
  • Mastery of video call, webinar, and virtual conferencing platforms.
  • Analyzing data and using results to inform project planning.
