Job Description

Full‑time, on‑site, licensed teaching position at Milner Crest Education Center.

Position Description

The Alternative Education Teacher supports students enrolled in one of our Alternative Education programs, attending school online, or learning in a hybrid environment while also being enrolled in either Destinations Academy or Marshfield High School (grades 9‑12). The teacher serves as an academic advisor and case manager, working directly with students and families to monitor progress, improve engagement, and implement personalized success plans.

The teacher ensures students have the necessary support to meet graduation requirements through regular communication, timely interventions, and outreach.

Qualifications
  • Properly endorsed Oregon Teaching License with endorsements appropriate for grades 9‑12.
  • Experience working in online, alternative, or non‑traditional educational settings preferred.
  • Proficient in educational technology, including online platforms, Google Suite, and student information systems (Synergy preferred).
  • Knowledge of credit recovery, graduation requirements, and secondary‑level instruction.
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain engagement with students and families.
  • Familiarity with Edgenuity or similar online learning platforms.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in implementing and adapting educational interventions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Create an environment of safety, respect, and rapport.
  • Establish a culture for learning and maintain classroom procedures.
  • Manage and maintain student behavior and the classroom’s physical space.
  • Actively monitor or proctor online instruction as required.
  • Write and utilize short‑term and long‑term plans for instruction.
  • Plan individually selected and personalized activities of high quality that align with district‑adopted goals, standards, and curriculum.
  • Develop goals and objectives to meet identified student outcomes.
  • Monitor student understanding and adjust plans based on learning needs and styles.
  • Select appropriate teaching techniques and instructional materials conducive to student learning.
  • Differentiated instruction to accommodate diverse abilities, learning profiles, and interests, ensuring all students access grade‑level content.
  • Implement evidence‑based instructional strategies within MTSS to proactively address academic and behavioral needs.
  • Integrate literacy‑based instruction across content areas to support reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for all students.
  • Use student performance data to guide instructional decisions, monitor progress, and inform interventions for individual and group learning needs.
  • Promote an inclusive learning environment by ensuring equitable access, removing barriers, and celebrating the diversity of all learners, including students with disabilities, English language learners, and students from historically underserved groups.
  • Hold high expectations of student learning and align curriculum to state standards.
  • Use alternative assessments when appropriate alongside traditional assessments.
  • Maintain a consistent, fair grading system.
  • Assess, record, and provide timely feedback to students on their progress and assignments.
  • Continuously grow professionally through upgrading skills and knowledge.
  • Communicate effectively, positively, and timely with school personnel, the public, and parents.
  • Collaborate effectively with students, parents, teachers, administration, and other staff.
  • Contribute to a culture of collaboration that embraces continuous learning and celebrates collective successes.
  • Act discreetly and professionally when discussing students and school issues.
  • Follow personal performance goals according to the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission’s Professional Development Plan.
  • Maintain appropriate teacher‑student relationships as outlined in the “Ethical Educator.”
  • Maintain regular attendance to preserve continuity of instruction.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Principal and/or Supervisor.
