Position Summary
The Adjunct Instructor provides instruction and academic support for Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS) courses in accordance with University standards for teaching excellence. This position is responsible for course preparation and delivery, student engagement, assessment of learning, timely communication and feedback, and effective use of instructional technologies. The Adjunct Instructor maintains compliance with University policies, accreditation requirements, and applicable regulations while collaborating with academic leadership, instructional designers, and student support professionals to foster student success and continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Email Communication:
Your WashU email is the University’s primary form of communication. Regularly check your WashU email for important communications and respond to requests promptly. All correspondence with students must occur via WashU email accounts. - Syllabus Submission:
Submit your class syllabus via Simple Syllabus at least two weeks before the first day of class or within seven days of executing this agreement. - Instructor Training Requirements:
Complete all CAPS instructor training requirements, including CAPS Foundations, Online Instructor Training, and the Course Design Institute (if required). Completion must be within four weeks from the start of the course. Additional periodic training, such as annual anti-harassment training and Code of Conduct certification, is required. - Course Preparation:
Build out the course in Canvas, complete with 1‑2 weeks of content, and publish it one week before the start of class. Use Canvas features such as Announcements, Syllabus, Grades, Assignments, and Modules in accordance with CAPS policies. - Office Hours / Meetings:
Hold office hours one hour per week, in‑person or via Zoom, to meet individual student needs. - Instructional Responsibilities:
Textbook Selection:

Support to submit textbook selections or confirm no books are required. Class
Schedule:
Courses meet per the published schedule, and any changes or cancellations must be communicated to CAPS and students promptly. Instructor Absence:
If unable to teach, notify the Vice Dean and provide a substitute or make‑up session. - Grading and Grade Submission:
Grade, provide feedback, and post grades in the Canvas gradebook within seven days after an assignment’s due date. Submit midterm and final grades in Workday by the Registrar’s deadline. - Attendance Verification:
Check attendance at the first and second class meetings (or via activity for online courses) and verify the roster. Record all grades in the Canvas Gradebook and make them visible to students. - Academic Integrity:
Maintain academic integrity, report violations to the Vice Dean, and have an AI policy consistent with CAPS AI policy. - Course Adjustments:
Coordinate with the Vice Dean to modify schedule, content, or delivery while meeting accreditation requirements. - Communication with Students:
Respond to student inquiries within 48 hours during the week and within 72 hours on weekends, when possible. - Professional Conduct:
Demonstrate integrity and fairness in all interactions, consistent with University policies. - Collaboration with Student Success Navigators:
Identify and refer students struggling academically to appropriate support services. - Meetings:
Attend at least one bi‑annual meeting as scheduled by the Vice Dean, Dean, Directors, Coordinators, and Instructional Design staff. - University Policies:
Comply with all applicable policies, including FERPA. - Course Evaluations:
Encourage students to complete evaluations at midterm and term end; use the feedback to improve future offerings. - Accommodations:
Provide reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in accordance with University policy. Work with Disability Resources for guidance.
