Job Description

Virginia Western Community College is a two‑year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System. The campus sits on 70 acres in southwest Roanoke, VA, and serves the Blue Ridge Mountains region, including Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The School of Career and Corporate Training, previously called Workforce Development, is accepting applications for part‑time day and/or evening Certified EKG Technician Instructor positions.

Responsibilities

Teach students in both classroom and lab settings to ensure they acquire the knowledge and skills required to pass their credentialing exam for the National Health career Association (NHA). Deliver established course curriculum and lab set‑up, ensure lab safety, monitor students, transfer knowledge in support of certification preparation, troubleshoot classroom technical issues, and track equipment usage and inventory. Assess students for content mastery and skills proficiency and maintain student attendance and grades in accordance with established policies.

Assist with content development and curriculum as needed. Classes will be held on Virginia Western’s main campus, with possible remote work as needed, primarily in weekday evenings and/or weekends.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Qualifications
  • EKG Technician with at least one year of experience performing EKGs and holding a current EKG certification.
  • Experience in the healthcare field.
  • Expert‑level skills and abilities necessary to pass the EKG exam, with knowledge of local and regional health care facilities and systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, cardiology, and EKG technology.
  • Experience working with computer programs, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams; develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments; work with adult learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in healthcare or a related field and five years of work experience in a patient‑care setting.
  • Proven ability to provide instruction in accelerated formats geared towards certification exam preparation.
  • Experience teaching adult learners and working in Canvas or a similar Learning Management System (helpful).
