Job Summary

Sherwood Charter School is a small, family-centered K–8 public charter school dedicated to academic excellence, character development, and strong partnerships with families. The Elementary Teacher instructs and supervises a diverse group of students by establishing a positive, respectful, and engaging learning environment, providing meaningful and varied learning opportunities, promoting high standards of performance for all students, and supporting the social-emotional development of the whole child.

As a member of a collaborative K–8 team, the Elementary Teacher contributes to integrated curriculum design, school culture, family engagement, and the shared responsibility of maintaining a joyful, safe, and academically rigorous learning environment.

Schedule:

1.0 FTE/8 hours per day, 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday. One Friday a month is a staff meeting. Two Fridays teachers can work from home to create curriculum. Teachers have one Friday off per month.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Meet the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR  to )
  • Plan and deliver high-quality instruction aligned to Oregon State Standards
  • Establish clear instructional objectives and create long- and short-range plans that meet students’ developmental needs and interests
  • Develop organized, engaging, and sequential lessons
  • Incorporate integrated and thematic learning experiences consistent with Sherwood Charter School’s instructional model
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with IEPs, 504 Plans, TAG identification, and other specialized supports
  • Diagnose student learning needs and design appropriate instructional responses
  • Assure that every student has multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency
  • Use formative and summative assessments to monitor progress and guide instruction
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students

Student Support & School Culture

  • Model and explicitly teach respect, responsibility, empathy, and teamwork
  • Establish and maintain a positive classroom climate
  • Develop reasonable classroom expectations and implement proactive classroom management strategies
  • Reinforce school wide behavior systems and character development initiatives
  • Participate in development and implementation of individual student plans (IEP, 504, behavior support plans)
  • Work collaboratively with staff to support students’ academic and social-emotional growth
  • Assume shared supervision responsibilities (playground, lunchroom, arrival/dismissal, etc.)

Family & Community Engagement

Sherwood Charter School values strong family partnerships and visible student learning. Elementary Teachers are expected to actively participate in and support:

  • Parent-Teacher Conferences
  • Celebration of Learning events and student showcases
  • School wide events and community-building activities
  • Field trips and experiential learning opportunities

Teachers maintain open, consistent communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and growth. Family engagement and participation in school events are considered essential components of the role.

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively as part of a small, cohesive K–8 team
  • Support and direct the work of Instructional Aides and volunteers
  • Participate in Response to Intervention (RTI) and collaborative problem-solving processes
