REPORTS TO: Program & Outreach Director, The Southport CoLAB

SCHEDULE: Part Time - 3 days per week (See Schedule Note below)

JOB LOCATION: Hybrid

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Southport School (TSS), located in historic Southport Village, was founded in 1984 and serves up to 125 students with language-based learning differences like dyslexia and attention issues like ADHD. The school’s core values are excellence, cerebrodiversity, innovation, empowerment, and collaboration. Its mission is to provide transformative educational experiences and thought leadership that have a lifelong impact on students and to share those learnings with the greater learning differences community through The Southport CoLAB.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Orton-Gillingham Fellow provides leadership and support for The Southport School’s Literacy and Language Department and Orton-Gillingham-based instruction and training. This role supports students and faculty through instructional leadership, staff development, program design, and representation of The Southport School in professional settings.

The Fellow also supports The Southport CoLAB by providing external training, practicum supervision, and developing new training courses.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Instructional Support

Support the Literacy and Language Department at TSS

Provide Orton-Gillingham training to faculty at TSS and clients of The Southport CoLAB

Perform classroom and virtual observations and strengthen Orton-Gillingham instruction through actionable feedback

Assist with training TSS faculty during faculty meetings and other times of the year, including in-service programs.

Collaboration & Mentorship

Work closely with the Program and Outreach Director to ensure TSS’ literacy strategies align with OG standards and best practices.

Support the ongoing training, certification, and implementation of OG instructional approaches.

Collaborate with The Southport CoLAB team members to design, coordinate, and deliver high-quality instruction and support based on the Orton-Gillingham approach

The Southport CoLAB Partnership & Growth

Lead the development and delivery of high-quality professional learning offerings, workshops, and consulting engagements

Present at local and national conferences

Represent The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB as a thought leader in the field

Assist with the coordination of independent Fellow contractors and Fellows-in-Training

Community Engagement

Partner with educators, researchers, and professional organizations to strengthen TSS’s reputation as a center of excellence in structured literacy, executive function, and language-based learning research.

Attend and/or participate in The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB events, including events, educational conferences, and meetings as a representative of The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB

Other

Perform other responsibilities as needed to support The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB’s mission and evolving priorities.

Support and facilitate The Southport School AOGPE accreditations, including submitting applications for accreditation renewals and managing site visits.

Uphold The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB’s Shared Commitments for Professional Practice, fostering a collaborative, professional, and inclusive school environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in a field appropriate for this position

Orton-Gillingham certification (Fellow)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This role is hybrid, with a blend of remote work and on‑site professional learning. On‑site days require frequent walking throughout school campuses, including moving between buildings.

The position may occasionally require standing, walking, and lifting or moving items up to 10 pounds to support typical office and on‑site activities.
