Online Training Specialist

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. The TxSSC serves as the clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas.

As a result, Texas has become a national leader in school safety practices and is relied upon for assistance and guidance from jurisdictions throughout the nation.

The Online Training Specialist will work closely with the Youth Initiatives Coordinator of the TxSSC to develop and implement online training curriculum for the Texas E-Cigarette and Tobacco Awareness Program (ETAP) and the Youth School Safety (YSS) Program. ETAP is the state mandated course for individuals under the age of 21 who are cited for possession of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.

This online course meets the requirements of Section 161.253, Texas Health and Safety Code, funded by Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). YSS is funded through state legislative appropriations for school safety as outlined in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code. Curriculum for these programs will be delivered through online training modules and focus on preventing youth tobacco and other drug use, teen mental health, school campus safety, and more.

This position will provide the opportunity to research, develop, and maintain training curriculum, provide technical assistance, and assist in the development and maintenance of a Youth School Safety Learning Portal. The role requires the development of training modules tailored for youth, educators, administrators, additional school personnel, and parent and community-based organizations. The position allows for considerable independent judgment, initiative, and action within the program.

It requires outstanding writing skills, critical thinking skills, excellent customer service, high attention to detail, organizational skills, enthusiastic professionalism, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Youth Initiatives Coordinator and IT staff to develop and maintain a Youth School Safety Learning Portal.
  • Research and develop content for current and future online training courses for ETAP.
  • Develop online training courses for the YSS Program with the Youth Initiatives Coordinator and YSS program staff.
  • Create training materials, educational toolkits, and additional resources for both youth and adult audiences for ETAP and YSS online training courses.
  • Develop marketing plans to promote existing and future ETAP courses through targeted outreach.
  • Provide technical assistance to end users and key stakeholders of ETAP, including judges, court personnel, school-based law enforcement, and school administrators.
  • Collaborate with IT staff to troubleshoot end‑user issues and design the layout of ETAP and YSS online training courses.
  • Work with the video production specialist to develop and produce educational videos for youth and adult audiences for ETAP and YSS online training courses.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual program summary reports to meet ETAP and YSS reporting requirements and deadlines.
  • Use developed reports to conduct data analysis for ETAP program development and funder review.
  • Maintain knowledge and expertise on school safety topics including teen mental health, tobacco and substance use prevention, and violence prevention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience working in the field of mental health, school campus safety, and/or substance use.
  • Experience writing educational information for youth and/or adult audiences.
  • Experience writing content for educational materials, promotions, and/or content for trainings and presentations.
  • Experience compiling program reports.
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Demonstrated understanding of program evaluation.
