Pay Range

Pay Range $1,483 to $1,800 per credit

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

The department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition is searching to fill open sections for Professional Writing Instructors to teach section WRT 105 or WRT 205 in Fall 2026.

  • WRT 105
    - Studio 1:
    Practice of Academic Writing (3 credit hours), Study and practice of writing processes, including critical reading, collaboration, revision, editing, and the use of technologies. Focuses on the aims, strategies, and conventions of academic prose, especially analysis and argumentation.
  • WRT 205
    - Studio 2:
    Critical Research and Writing (3 credit hours). Study and practice of critical, research-based writing, including research methods, presentation genres, source evaluation, audience analysis, and library/online research. Students complete at least one sustained research project.

Multiple sections may be available; teaching load for new instructors may be anywhere from 1 to 4 sections per semester dependent on need and availability. All offerings are contingent on budgetary approval and sufficient enrollment. PLEASE NOTE :
All offerings are face-to-face in Syracuse, NY; remote teaching is not available.

Qualifications
  • Prior College teaching experience.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Applicants with current or prior experience teaching in the SU department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition will have priority consideration
Responsibilities

The duties associated with teaching assignments include:

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meeting all the designated class periods.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University Regulations.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
