Pay Range

Pay Range $1,483.20-$1,596.50 per credit hour

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is seeking an instructor to teach VIS 231 Visual Journalism on Fridays 12:45pm-3:30pm during the Fall 2026 semester (3 credits).

Course Description: Students gain a real-world understanding of the building blocks of telling compelling visual stories in both video and still photography by learning foundational principles and skills for visual journalism. The course covers camera fundamentals, visual composition, exposure, framing, lighting, audio, and post-production. Students develop critical thinking and ethical awareness as they produce multimedia content integrating both photography and video storytelling for journalistic contexts.

Qualifications

Job Specific Qualifications

• Preference given to applicants with professional experience in photography, videography or multimedia journalism and prior teaching experience.
• Proficiency with Adobe Premiere and Adobe Lightroom.

It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

• Developing a syllabus.
• Ordering books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes in advance.
• Preparing for classes.
• Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
• Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

• Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
• Ability to hold office hours on campus.
• Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

• Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
