Location: Orono

Position Overview

As a member of the Maine Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC) team, the MEOC Advisor conducts extensive recruitment activities in Penobscot and Washington counties, especially around Bangor, Orono, Old Town, and Downeast Maine to fully enroll a proportional share of the funded number of MEOC participants for the MEOC grant. Currently the MEOC grant is funded to serve 2,269 participants. The MEOC Advisor provides academic, career, educational advising, and academic support through high school graduation, the admissions and postsecondary enrollment process, and financial aid and scholarship application process.

This position is physically based in Penobscot County, Maine, and requires regular travel between Orono, Bangor, Old Town, Machias and Calais to serve participants. It is not a fully remote position. Typical hiring range for this soft‑money funded position is $32,000 to $42,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Services are provided in‑person and virtually to both groups and individual participants.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct recruitment activities across Penobscot and Washington counties.
  • Provide academic, career, and educational advising to MEOC participants.
  • Support high school graduation, admissions, postsecondary enrollment, financial aid, and scholarship applications.
  • Travel regularly within the project service area to meet participants.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, social work, or related field.
  • Two years previous experience working with disadvantaged youth or adults, schools, or community agencies, or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently of direct supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and agencies simultaneously.
  • Valid driver’s license to travel extensively within the service area.

Preferred:

  • Preference is given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming the disadvantages of circumstances similar to those the MEOC population serves.
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with Zoom.
