Pay Range

Pay Range $1483 to $2,000 per credit course

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

The Department of African American Studies in Syracuse University’s College of Arts & Sciences seeks a part-time Instructor for the 2026 fall semester to teach an Introductory level course on music among people of African descent in American communities with the start date of August 17, 2026.

The course meeting day/time being Tuesday/Thursday, from 12:30 pm – 1:50 pm with an in-person format on the SU Campus.

AAS 206:
Intro to African American Music (3 credits)

The course introduces students to the broad range of Black musical artistry including Gospel, Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop/Rap, Blues, Reggae, and musical influences of immigrants from Africa and throughout the diaspora. It addresses the social and political significance of Black music and the politics and technologies of Black aesthetics.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department.

All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment.

  • Doctoral training in Black Studies and Humanities preferred.

Responsibilities

Part-time Instructor duties will include the following:

  • Teaching one section of AAS 206:
    Intro to African American Music
  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparing lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.
  • You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
  • Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
  • Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by your department’s policies for part-time instructors.
