Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

The Setnor School of Music within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-Time Instructor to teach Jazz/Commercial Voice Lessons during the Fall and Spring semesters, 2026-27.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of a master’s degree in music (jazz or commercial voice performance or equivalent experience preferred).
  • Experience teaching studio voice at the collegiate level.
  • Jazz/Commercial Music/Musical Theater Performance credentials.
  • Significant piano skills required including the ability to accompany vocal students on piano (with swing, Latin, RnB, and other modern feels) when delivering instruction.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • The candidate should have strong attention to detail, knowledge of course content, and demonstrated pedagogical ability, as well as the ability to relate well in a classroom and one-on-one environment with college-level students.
Responsibilities
  • Being present and instructing weekly lessons during Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Set up lesson schedule.
  • Attend jazz faculty orientation meeting, and jazz faculty meetings throughout the semester (approximately 3 per semester).
  • Collaborate to build and maintain the jazz/commercial voice studio, including participation in Setnor School of Music recruitment events.
  • Develop and/or update a class syllabus.
  • Prepare student assignments.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meet all designated class periods.
  • Participate in end-of-semester juries.
  • Participate in fall/spring audition days.
  • Submit completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Grade student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Build a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
  • Support student performances at major jazz & commercial music events where possible.
  • If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.
  • You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
