About The Job
This position is responsible for evaluation and implementation of all TRIO Upward Bound (UB) academic services including academic year tutoring and classroom instruction (4 classes during the academic year) and all instruction during the summer program (10-14 total classes delivered daily). This position oversees high school student academic progress and develops holistic academic intervention strategies and services to positively influence the programs’ ability to meet federal program objectives and prepare students for academic rigors of postsecondary school.
The Academic Coordinator must stay abreast of best practices in curriculum development, tutoring, training, evaluation, behavior management, Minneapolis Public Schools graduation requirements and curriculum design and implementation changes/policies, youth development, educational best-practices and college readiness indicators. The Academic Coordinator interviews, hires, trains, supervises and monitors performance for 15-20 support staff each academic year and 15 instructional staff each summer. The budgeted salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually.
Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department. This position is primarily on campus four days a week, with one day remote. Please note, this position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship. This position does not offer a STEM OPT training program.
Direct Service and Instruction (35%)
- Develop, revise and implement curriculum that is holistic, effective, and in accordance with federal mandates and educational best practices relevant to contrasting student demographics, supporting and/or supplementing Minneapolis Public High School curriculum and graduation requirements for participants.
- Set curriculum objectives per class, evaluate effectiveness and implement lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate (i.e., overseeing ACT curriculum and waivers, ensure all 11th graders register and take the ACT).
- Track student performance, monitor attendance, and provide regular feedback on participant performance. Provide recommendations to advisors regarding student intervention services using a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework, which includes a Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) system to increase students' academic and social-emotional proficiency.
- Instruct one or more classes during the academic year and/or summer. Serve as backup tutor and instructor for classes and tutorial services as needed for effective delivery of academic services.
- Assist with student recruitment including providing marketing presentations at target schools, meeting with recruits and families, representing the program at open houses and other school/community events, auditing student and parent applications, and meeting with school officials and editing marketing materials.
- Chaperone students to conferences, evening activities, college visits and classroom field trips as assigned.
- Assist with the design and implementation of holistic family education workshops and orientation sessions geared toward students and families from low-income and/or first-generation communities.
- Reserve rooms and facilities for academic year and summer session.
- Annually implement and evaluate academic program initiatives, including: summer academic courses and academic year after school (component) courses, tutoring program, and educational events/activities.
