Graduate Student Instructor Position

The position involves teaching an independent section of a laboratory course, grading assignments, holding office hours, and grading exams for either Chem 130 (General Chemistry Lecture) or Chem 210 (Organic I Lecture). These will be 50% (two lab section meetings/wk) positions.

The CHEM 453 position requires teaching three independent discussion sections of Chem 453, grading assignments, holding office hours, and grading exams.

1. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or closely related field or successful completion of the comparable laboratory course during their undergraduate or graduate studies. 2. GSI training in the UM-Chemistry Department (scheduled for late August) 3. English proficiency, based on ELI-OET, where applicable. 4. To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours.

With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable.

The LSA Chemistry Department is anticipating multiple GSI position openings for the Fall 2026 term primarily for our introductory courses, CHEM 125/126 (General Chemistry Lab) and CHEM 211 (Organic Chemistry I Lab), with one position in CHEM 453. CHEM 125/126 and 211 will be lab sections; CHEM 453 will have discussion sections. In-person teaching is mandatory, as is attendance at a weekly staff meeting that will be scheduled to accommodate GSI schedules as the term approaches.

CHEM 125/126:
Three hour lab section. Selected candidates will teach and grade for two lab sections and also grade midterm and final exams for Chem 130 (General Chemistry).

CHEM 211:
Three hour lab section. Selected candidates will teach and grade for two lab sections and also grade midterm and final exams for Chem 210 (Structure and Reactivity I).

CHEM 453:
Three fifty minute discussion sections. Selected candidates will teach three discussion sections and grade all assignments and exams for the course.

Candidates will need the skills required to demonstrate lab technique and teach students how to carry out and troubleshoot experiments.
