The Cosmosphere International Sci Ed Center & Space Museum is a Smithsonian-affiliated institution located in Hutchinson, KS, with one of the world’s most significant collections of U.S. and Russian space artifacts. Its exhibits and programs uniquely tell the story of the Space Race while providing immersive learning experiences aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. The Cosmosphere is dedicated to inspiring learners of all ages through inquiry-based education that encourages curiosity and critical thinking.

The campus features the Carey Digital Dome Theater, the Justice Planetarium, Dr. Goddard’s Lab with live science demonstrations, and Cosmo Kids, an interactive area designed for young explorers.

Role Description

The STEAM Educator is a full-time, hybrid role based in Hutchinson, KS, with a blend of on-site instruction and approved work-from-home responsibilities. This role designs and delivers engaging STEAM lessons and activities for diverse audiences, including K-12 students, families, and visiting groups, both in person and virtually. Day-to-day tasks include developing standards-aligned curricula, preparing instructional materials, facilitating hands-on demonstrations and labs, and supporting programs in spaces such as the planetarium, digital dome, and education labs.

The STEAM Educator collaborates with education and museum staff to integrate artifacts and exhibits into programming, contributes to outreach efforts, and assists with teacher training workshops and special events. Regular responsibilities also include assessing learning outcomes, maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment, and adapting content to meet varying age levels and learning needs.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated skills in Lesson Planning and curriculum development for STEAM or related subjects.
  • Background in Education, learning methodologies, or instructional design in formal or informal settings.
  • Strong Communication skills, including the ability to explain complex scientific and historical concepts clearly to varied audiences.
  • Proven Teaching experience or facilitation of workshops, camps, or museum programs.
  • Experience in Training learners or educators, including leading group activities and providing constructive feedback.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Comfort with hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and the use of interactive educational technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and maintain an inclusive, learner-centered atmosphere.
  • Organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple programs, schedules, and documentation.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or special events as program needs require.
