Pay Range

Pay Range $1,483 - $2,000 per credit course

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

The Chemistry Department is seeking a part-time instructor to teach CHE 103:
Chemistry in the Modern World (4 credits) for the Fall 2026 semester. This course explores the basic concepts and principles of chemistry and applications of chemistry to problems in the modern world.

The lecture meets in-person each Monday and Wednesday from 2:15pm-3:35pm. Additionally, the instructor will be required to attend multiple in-person lab sessions per week. The instructor will be supported by being provided syllabus templates and assistance related to exam preparation and assignments. Office staff aid with class logistics and student organization. The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate history within in the hiring department.

All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment. Current internal applicants will receive priority consideration.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should hold a Ph.D., or working towards a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • Candidates have a previous experience teaching chemistry
  • Candidates have a strong laboratory background or previous laboratory instruction experience

Responsibilities

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover class.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by your department’s policies for part-time instruction.
