Pay Range $1,483.20 - $1,751 per credit hour

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

The School of Art within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-Time Instructor to teach ARI 223 Ceramics Wheel-throwing, a three credit hour course, during the Fall semester, 2026.

Introduction to the potter’s wheel as a tool for creating form and surface with clay. Introduction to contemporary and historical artworks that make use of the wheel.

• MFA candidacy
• Two plus years experience working with the wheel.

• Demonstrated competency with the wheel
• Ability to articulate in a clear and consistent manner the techniques and concepts needed to make a personal statement through using the potters wheel.

• Meet the class on time; be prepared to demonstrate a variety of forming and surface embellishment techniques;
• Guide the classes work from the claymixer on through to the unloading of the glaze kiln.
• Provide cogent, sensitive feedback on the projects with the learning objectives as stated in the syllabus at the center of classroom and individual discussions.
• Discuss students efforts in a historical as well as contemporary context.

• Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
• Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
• Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
• Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Meeting all designated class periods.
• If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.
• You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
• Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
• Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
• Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
