Graduate Student Instructor Positions

The LSA Chemistry Department is anticipating two GSI position openings for the Fall 2026 term in CHEM 242 (1 x 50% position) and CHEM 352 (1 x 25% position); these will be lab sections. In-person teaching is mandatory, as is attendance at a weekly staff meeting that will be scheduled to accommodate GSI schedules as the term approaches.

CHEM 242:
Introduction to Chemical Analysis
- Introductory laboratory course in wet chemical and modern instrumental analysis. Experiments emphasize equilibria, separations, electrochemistry, and spectroscopy.

CHEM 352:
Introduction to Biochemical Research Techniques
- This course provides instruction on biochemical laboratory techniques and emphasizes fundamental principles of biochemistry. This laboratory course is designed to introduce students to widely used techniques in contemporary biochemistry and analysis of biochemical data.

Candidates will need the skills required to demonstrate lab technique and teach students how to carry out and troubleshoot experiments.

The Chem 242 position involves leading two lab sections of Chem 242, including instructing students in the use of modern analytical instrumentation, including HPLC, GC, and mass spectrometry. In addition, the GSI assigned to this course will also grade assignments for those two lab sections and help with grading exams for Chem 241.

The Chem 352 position involves leading one lab section of Chem 352, including instructing students in the use of biochemical techniques and instrumentation, such as ELISA and analysis of nucleic acids and proteins. In addition the GSI assigned to this course will also grade assignments for their lab section, and will help with grading exams for either Chem 351 or a 400-level biochemistry lecture course.

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or closely related field or successful completion of the comparable laboratory course during their undergraduate or graduate studies.
• GSI training in the UM-Chemistry Department (scheduled for late August)
• English proficiency, based on ELI-OET, where applicable.
• To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours. With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable.

• Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or closely related field
• LSA student enrolled in a graduate program
