Location: Remote (Home Office) / Hybrid with mandatory travel to Alaska
Position Type: Full-Time / Contract
Travel Requirement: Onsite visits 2–3 times per school year (Travel stipend provided)
Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate, independent, and adaptable Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) to provide critical educational support to students across Alaska. In this unique hybrid role, you will deliver high-quality, specialized tele-practice instruction and consultation from your home office, combined with 2 to 3 intentional, multi-day onsite visits per year.
Serving a diverse student population—often including rural and Indigenous communities—you will manage IEP caseloads, collaborate with multidisciplinary local school teams, and support students using various communication modalities (ASL, Total Communication, or Listening/Spoken Language).
Key Responsibilities
Direct Instruction: Deliver specialized, evidence-based virtual instruction to DHH students (Pre-K through 12th grade) targeting language development, academic concepts, and self-advocacy skills.
IEP Management: Write, review, and implement individualized Language and Communication Plans and IEP goals in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Consultation &
Collaboration:
Act as a remote consultant for general education teachers, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), local audiologists, and educational interpreters to ensure classroom accessibility.Technology Support: Virtually monitor and guide school staff and students in the proper use and maintenance of hearing assistive technology (e.g., FM/DM systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants).
Family Engagement: Maintain consistent communication with parents and guardians, offering resources to support language acquisition at home.
Onsite Field Visits (2–3 Times Per Year)
Direct Assessment & Observations: Conduct in-person student observations, language assessments, and environmental acoustics evaluations in the classroom.
Hands-on Modeling: Provide in-person modeling of instructional strategies, tactile learning techniques, and behavioral supports for local site staff.
Community Building: Participate in face-to-face IEP meetings, conduct parent workshops, and immerse yourself in the unique school culture of our Alaskan districts.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required:
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education, Deaf Education, or a related field.
Certification: Valid Alaska Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Special Education - Hearing Impairment / Deaf Education (or immediate eligibility to obtain via reciprocity).
Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of experience teaching school-aged DHH students.
Travel Readiness: Willingness and ability to travel independently to Alaska 2–3 times a year. Travel may include flights to hubs (Anchorage/Fairbanks) and occasional travel via smaller commuter aircraft to rural village sites.
Remote Infrastructure: A dedicated home office space with reliable high-speed internet and a computer capable of streaming high-definition video for teletherapy sessions.
Preferred:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or experience with Total Communication frameworks.
Experience working in rural, cross-cultural, or Indigenous educational settings.
Prior experience delivering virtual teletherapy or instruction effectively.
Compensation & Travel Benefits
Salary/Rate: Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience.
Travel Stipend & Benefits:
100% paid travel expenses, including airfare (to and within Alaska), lodging, ground transportation, and a daily meal per diem.
