Position: ANSEP Math Recitation Leader-Temporary

Are you passionate about STEM and eager to inspire others in this field? ANSEP is looking for motivated and dedicated Recitation Leaders to join our team for the academic year. Our department is committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment, in which you will play a vital role.

As a Recitation Leader, you'll be at the forefront of student learning and engagement. Recitation Leaders facilitate weekly recitation study sessions for ANSEP students, providing crucial academic support. Recitation leaders help ANSEP students understand course material, develop study skills, prepare for exams, and facilitate peer collaboration between students.

Math Recitation Leaders work closely with the ANSEP Math Recitation and Tutoring Program Manager, ANSEP University Success Director, and Acceleration Academy staff to make sure students are academically successful and are meeting ANSEP program requirements.

Recitation offerings change each semester depending on student needs. Recitation Leaders primarily lead sessions for the following mathematics and statistics courses: MATH 105, MATH 151, MATH 152, MATH 251, MATH 252, MATH 253, STAT 200, STAT 253. A Recitation Leader must have earned a grade of a B or higher in a course to lead sessions for that course.

To excel in this role, you must not only be knowledgeable in mathematics and statistics content but also communicate your knowledge effectively and adapt to various student needs. Ideal Math Recitation Leaders can support students' learning without simply providing answers. Ideal candidates can also form connections with students to understand their interests, learning styles, and academic support needs. Your collaborative personality and ability to understand and adapt to various student needs make you an ideal candidate for this position.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Need to have passed any of these courses with a B or higher to lead a recitation or that course: MATH 105, MATH 151, MATH 152, MATH A251, MATH 252 and MATH 253.
  • Experience tutoring or teaching Math preferred.
  • Knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and related courses taught at the University of Alaska.
  • Knowledge and skills regarding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) and leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate well and speak in front of a group as the leader of the group.
  • Previous tutoring, coaching, teaching, or mentoring experience preferred.
  • Experience working with rural or indigenous populations preferred.
Position Details

This position is located on the UAA campus in Anchorage. This is a part-time, temporary, non-exempt staff (hourly) position. New hires will be placed on the UA Temporary Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 76, based on education and experience.
