Position: Associate or Full Professor of Higher Education with Tenure

Job Summary

The Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks a colleague for a tenure-track appointment in the graduate programs in Higher Education in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education. We seek applications from policy scholars who are committed to advancing equity, justice and excellence in higher education through research situated in one or more of the following areas: state or federal policy;

postsecondary access and/or enrollment in postsecondary education; and/or postsecondary outcomes.

Regardless of specialization area, we seek a scholar who can build on their expertise to play a major role in the creation and use of scholarship in higher education, who has strong methodological training in quantitative and/or mixed methods, who can teach courses in areas of need, and who seeks to influence institutional, national, and/or international policies that will improve higher education policies.

We seek a collaborative colleague who will contribute to achieving the Center's promise and goals, which are consistent with the Vision, Mission, and Values of the Marsal Family School of Education. Such colleagues will uphold high standards for research, teaching, and service to the profession. Toward this end, we seek an individual with a passion for contributing to the betterment of society through education, who will work with CSHPE colleagues to position the Center's academic programs and research portfolio to effectively meet contemporary challenges in higher education.

Responsibilities

Candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, teach graduate courses, advise master's and doctoral students, direct doctoral dissertations, and serve as an active member of the Marsal School, the University, and higher education professional communities. Joint appointments may be possible within the Marsal School or with other schools and colleges.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should have a track record of outstanding scholarship in a discipline or professional field that contributes to the scholarly study of policy in postsecondary education. Preferred candidates will be eligible for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor (with tenure). Candidates should be, or have the potential of being, nationally recognized scholars with a strong record of empirical policy studies and grants in higher education, demonstrated teaching ability, strong methodological skills, and a desire to develop sponsored research.

Prior administrative or public policy experience in higher education is also highly desirable, as well as evidence of public impact.

Successful candidates will have:

  • A doctorate in higher education, education, public policy, or a related social science field
  • An established program of research and publication in one of the desired specialization areas
  • Experience teaching at the master's and/or doctoral levels
  • A track record of developing and securing grants to support research, or for assistant professors, the promise of developing such a track record
  • Experience advising and mentoring graduate students in the field of higher education
  • Interest in contributing to the full life of the program and the Marsal Family School (e.g. committee work, professional development, and future leadership) conditional on rank

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

We plan to fill the position with a start date of August 2027. Salary will be negotiated on the basis of the candidate's experience and qualifications. The appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year with possible additional remuneration for administrative duties. Salaries at the University of Michigan compare favorably with those at other leading institutions of higher education.
