Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn;
Jackson Heights, Queens;
Port Richmond, Staten Island;
Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 30,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer).

Current Opening

Restorative Justice Coordinator Make the Road New York (MRNY) a full time Restorative Justice Coordinator to be a part of our School Based Team at Bushwick Campus Community School to support and implement restorative justice. The position requires a flexible schedule. The Restorative Justice Coordinator will be partnering with four high schools in Bushwick Campus Community School. A community school is a hub of resources, programs, and services that contribute to meeting the needs and building on the strengths of the whole student, family and broader community.

It supports a culture of community where trust and accountability among all stakeholders are nurtured and strengthened. Restorative Justice is an integral part of our community school strategy as it builds and strengthens relationships and supports all school stakeholders to respond to conflict and harm in a way that encourages social emotional growth. Applicants must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends.

MRNY is a newly unionized workplace. This is a bargaining unit position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with school administration, youth and MRNY staff to create and maintain a vision for restorative school climate and culture at Bushwick Campus
  • Collaborate with the Community School Director and the Campus Restorative Justice Action team to create campus-wide plan and individual school plans for supporting and sustaining the implementation of restorative approaches
  • Facilitate ongoing restorative justice trainings for key school stakeholders (youth, staff, and families)
  • Conduct a yearly school climate needs assessment, on the needs of students, families, administrators, and school community to continuously inform the school vision
  • Support the development of a cohort of RJ Youth Leaders to implement RJ practices in our school
  • Lead an action team of school stakeholders, youth, parents and/or school staff responsible for implementing and sustaining the restorative justice implementation plan
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the Community School team to implement community building circles, community events as well as workshops in restorative justice approaches with students and parents
  • Act as the point person for out-of-classroom interventions (e.g., restorative conversations/mediations; circles; reintegration meetings) and support teachers in facilitating in-classroom interventions (e.g., talking circles/connection circles/community builders)
  • Track and report data on all student interventions
  • Participate in monthly community school team meetings
  • Ensure restorative justice practices are integrated with a racial justice lens
  • Special projects as assigned
  • This position is a full-time in person position, however employer will use best efforts to allow for 1 day of remote work per week
