Position: ELL Instructor - Online (Part Time)

Instructor

To advance the college's mission, vision, principles, values and strategic initiatives through continuous improvement decisions.

Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching non-credit English Language and Literacy (ELL) courses to students enrolled in Kirkwood's Adult Education and Literacy Programs. Instruction will take online via Zoom. At times there might be travel to other Kirkwood locations for meetings. The instructor also assists students in transitioning from ELL courses to Kirkwood-related work training and higher education opportunities in collaboration with other Kirkwood staff.

Classes are held Monday through Thursday for two hours each day. The session dates for this program year are:

Session 1:
July 8 – September 10, 2026

Session 2:
September 28 – December 10, 2026

Session 3:
January 11 – March 11, 2027

Session 4:
March 29 – June 3, 2027

The total hours per week for one class equates to 10 hours, with limited extra hours available for team meetings, special projects, and professional development. While previous teaching experience (any subject, but literacy, language, or ELL preferred) is encouraged, there is no licensing requirement.

Duties/

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist students with coursework in a variety of formats including individualized instruction, computer assisted instruction, large group courses, and other methods.
  • Collaborate with fellow learning center instructors on curriculum development, student intake/advising, and staff development activities.
  • Conduct CASAS assessments for eligible students.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.
  • Provide contextualized, scaffolded, interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements ELL college and career readiness and CASAS ELL standards.
  • Track attendance daily and submit reports.
  • Respond in a timely manner to communications and requests from program director and coordinator.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities.

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work.
