Semester in Detroit Program Specialist

Semester in Detroit (SiD) at the University of Michigan is looking for a Program Specialist committed to building reciprocal relationships between undergraduate students and community organizations in Detroit.

About the Position & You Semester in Detroit (SiD) is an immersive internship program within the LSA Residential College. SiD works with students, faculty, and staff across U-M campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint) and Grand Valley State University to build reciprocal relationships with community organizations in Detroit.

The SiD Program Specialist will report to the SiD Associate Director. Due to the intentionally small size of the program, you'll manage different areas of work simultaneously. These range from student recruitment and support to building and maintaining community partner relationships. The selected candidate will work in a hybrid work mode as defined by the University.

Responsibilities*

Community Collaboration (35%) Establish relationships with new Detroit community partners through collaborative projects Host and facilitate discussions about contemporary issues in Detroit, privilege, oppression, and resistance Participate in long-term, strategic planning with the Associate Director and Faculty Director

Student Enrichment & Support (40%) Manage logistics and content planning for program events (e.g.: Detroiters Speak Series, Immersion Weekend, and Orientation for incoming summer cohorts) Manage student staff members and support Ann Arbor-based recruitment efforts Prepare accepted students for participation in the summer program and lead community-building activities Manage student housing in Detroit and provide student support during the summer program Organize Detroit-based social activities for students in the summer program Organize events for SiD alumni (virtual and in-person)

Administrative (25%) Develop and execute SiD's communications strategy, including writing the e-newsletter, managing website content, creating social media posts, and designing graphic design assets Support budgeting and financial management of the program, including the internal scholarships program

Required Qualifications *

Bachelor's degree or equivalent education/experience Experience building and maintaining community partnerships Experience in undergraduate student recruitment and program development Experience in marketing and communications using print and digital media Basic knowledge of managing budgets Reliable transportation. This role requires travel between Ann Arbor, Detroit, and other areas.

Desired Qualifications*

Demonstrated connection to or experience working with Detroit-based community organizations 3 years of experience managing projects independently and with limited resources at a university program, small nonprofit organization, or comparable program 3 years experience teaching, facilitating workshops, dialogue groups, or educational discussions

Modes of Work

Additional Information

Primary work locations are the University of Michigan Detroit Center and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor campus. Opportunities for remote work may also be available. The SiD Program Specialist occasionally works evening and weekend hours to support student events and program activities. SiD Staff travels between campuses with mileage reimbursement.

The salary range for this position is $46,400 to $58,000, please note a higher salary may be offered based on equity and the selected candidate's experience. Salary is determined by direct relevant experience and demonstrated past performance results, while ensuring equity on our team.
