ABOUT THE POSITION

The Academic Tutor is a part-time temporary position within the Illinois College of Osteopathic Medicine (IllinoisCOM). The Academic Tutor supports currently enrolled IllinoisCOM students by assisting with academic success strategies. Tutors provide individual and/or group tutoring to students across a broad range of courses based on their personal area of expertise. Tutors meet with students to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes, and help students solve specific problems.

Tutoring supports classroom-centered activities and is responsive to students identified needs while remaining aligned with course objectives, approved instructional materials, and institutional academic-integrity expectations. Tutors do not complete assignments for students, provide answers to graded work, predict examination content, independently modify course requirements, or serve as the instructor of record. The Academic Tutor reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

This is a remote position. Tutors will typically be assigned 2 to10 hours per week, depending on availability and need. Applicants should generally be available to tutor at least two days per week. All tutoring sessions will be conducted virtually.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (include, but are not limited to):
  • Complete required tutor training and onboarding before providing tutoring services
  • Prepare for and facilitate individual and/or group sessions
  • Document tutoring attendance and services using designated system
  • Protect the confidentiality and integrity of examinations, student information, and course materials
  • Recognize, utilize, and apply study techniques that address different learning needs, learning styles, and student preferences
  • Foster a professional and welcoming environment by demonstrating respect for students’ diverse backgrounds, cultures, language skills,and experiences
  • Use active listening strategies to allow student to determine content and pace of tutoring
  • Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills, cultural competence, and reflection skills
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice
  • Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
  • Communicate with students in a manner that is both direct and supportive.
  • Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success
  • Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources when necessary
  • Facilitate problem-solving through inquiry, curiosity, and collaborative learning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently enrolled and in good standing as a second-, third-, or fourth-year student at an accredited MD or DO granting medical school.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in each course or subject area the applicant will tutor, as established through coursework, academic performance, faculty recommendation, or other documentation requested by IllinoisCOM.
  • Must be in good academic and professional standing and maintain this standing throughout employment
  • Demonstrated mastery of the subject area, as evidenced by relevant coursework, professional experience, faculty recommendation, or other credentials approved by IllinoisCOM.
  • Prior tutoring, teaching, facilitation, or academic-support experience preferred.
  • Ability to provide virtual tutoring from a private, professional environment with reliable internet access and appropriate audio and video capabilities.
